What You’ll Do

This role supports a confidential client as an entry-level Healthcare Project Engineer. You will assist with planning, design review, construction administration, and project coordination for Non-Recurring Maintenance (NRM) projects, station-level projects, leases, and associated outpatient clinics. Typical responsibilities include:

• Evaluate project requirements and develop phased construction approaches that minimize risk and impact to patient care
• Assist with design reviews across disciplines (architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, fire protection)
• Ensure compliance with healthcare codes, The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 99 Healthcare Facilities Code, and applicable VA/federal design requirements
• Prepare scopes of work, government cost estimates, concept documents, and project applications in VA systems and databases
• Coordinate cross-departmental planning meetings and stakeholder communication during planning, design, construction, completion, and warranty phases
• Support construction management tasks that protect patients and staff (temporary means & methods, infection prevention, life-safety measures)
• Contribute to capital planning and provide status updates on assigned projects to service leadership

Responsibilities

• Participate in site surveys and baseline data collection to initiate design for renovations, additions, and utility/plant work
• Monitor construction activities and resolve multi-disciplinary design and installation issues
• Review and comment on design submissions to ensure regulatory and code compliance for healthcare facilities
• Identify project risks and propose mitigation strategies tied to patient safety and operational continuity
• Prepare project documentation and maintain accurate records in required databases
• Support development of task forces and workgroups to manage complex, multi-faceted projects

Qualifications

To be considered, applicants must meet the Basic Requirements within 30 days of the announcement close.

Minimums (one of the following):

• United States citizenship (non-citizens only in limited circumstances)
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or Architecture from an ABET-accredited program (or a National Council of Architectural Registration Boards curriculum)
• OR Evidence of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam (EIT certificate or NCEES test results)
• OR Current professional registration/licensure as a Professional Engineer or Architect

Grade-level guidance:

• GS-7: Meets basic requirements (entry-level)
• GS-9: One year relevant experience or advanced degree as specified
• GS-11: One year at next lower grade or advanced graduate education / doctorate options
• GS-12: Full performance level; requires experience equivalent to the next lower grade and demonstrated KSAs for complex healthcare engineering projects

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (examples):

• Understanding of engineering principles as applied in healthcare environments
• Ability to interpret and apply codes, regulations, and healthcare design standards
• Project management fundamentals applicable to healthcare construction
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present technical material to clinical and administrative staff

Work Schedule & Benefits

• Full-time, typical schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
• Telework: Ad-hoc (inclement weather) with TELECOMMUTE allowances as appropriate
• Estimated salary: $143,506 per year (estimated)

Requirements & Conditions of Employment

• Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959

Physical & Environmental Demands

• Moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 lbs), reaching, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending
• Work may involve ladders, scaffolding, vehicle operation, and occasional confined-space tasks
• Exposure to indoor/outdoor elements, dusts, fumes, solvents, and noise may occur
• Near and far vision, depth perception, and hearing (aids permitted) may be required
