What You’ll Do
This role is an entry-level Hardware Development Engineer position focused on electrical and controls sub-components for material handling systems. You'll work with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to design, prototype, validate, and document electrical and controls hardware that meets product requirements, manufacturability, and safety standards.
- Support electrical sub-component design for power distribution and control panels (3-phase and single-phase).
- Create and update electrical layouts, schematics, panel designs, and PCB layouts under senior guidance.
- Assist with controls architecture using IPCs, PLCs, SCADA, and industrial protocols (EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET).
- Specify and integrate VFDs, sensors, encoders, safety circuits, and other field devices.
- Build and test prototypes, run validation tests, and troubleshoot hardware issues to root-cause defects.
- Produce component and assembly drawings, bills of materials, and supporting CAD documentation (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks).
- Coordinate with suppliers on DFM, tolerance analysis, and production feasibility.
- Support compliance with applicable electrical and safety standards (NEC / NFPA 70 and related standards).
- Document design trade-offs, test results, and decisions for future reference and reviews.
Key Responsibilities
- Electrical sub-component design & development:
- Assist in developing schematics, panel designs, and PCB layouts that meet specification and EMC/EMI considerations.
- Apply modular, scalable design principles that prioritize reliability and maintainability.
- Controls engineering & prototyping:
- Support control system integration including PLCs, IPCs, VFDs, and industrial networks.
- Participate in prototype assembly, bench testing, and functional validation.
- Design validation, supplier coordination & compliance:
- Run analyses and tests to validate designs; investigate and resolve failures.
- Work with suppliers on manufacturability (DFM), lead-time, and tolerance trade-offs.
- Help ensure designs meet relevant codes and standards.
- Collaboration, documentation & continuous learning:
- Engage in design reviews and iterate based on feedback.
- Produce clear documentation for designs, trade studies, and test results.
- Mentor interns and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
A day in the life
You’ll spend time with senior engineers reviewing requirements and prototypes, using CAD tools to create drawings and schematics, coordinating with suppliers on manufacturing feasibility, building test setups to validate designs, and documenting outcomes. Expect regular team design reviews, scoping meetings, and hands-on lab work.
Minimum Qualifications
- 2+ years of hardware design and validation experience (components, subsystems, or systems).
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or equivalent.
- Hands-on familiarity with reading and producing electrical schematics and mechanical assembly drawings.
- Basic experience with CAD tools for electrical and mechanical design.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience integrating PLCs, IPCs, and VFDs in industrial systems.
- Familiarity with EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, or other industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with PCB layout best practices and EMI/EMC considerations.
- Experience with DFM, tolerance analysis, or UL 508A / NFPA 70E familiarity.
- Experience with hardware/software integration and real-time systems.
- Strong problem-solving, documentation, and cross-functional communication skills.
Compensation & Locations
The role is full-time. Final salary and total compensation will be determined by location, experience, and qualifications. Representative base salary ranges listed in the original posting:
- GA, Atlanta: $96,600 - $160,000 USD annually
- OH, Cincinnati: $96,600 - $160,000 USD annually
- TN, Nashville: $91,700 - $160,000 USD annually
- TX, Austin: $96,600 - $160,000 USD annually
- WA, Bellevue: $96,600 - $160,000 USD annually
