What You’ll Do

This entry-level GIS Technician I role supports engineering and utility mapping projects. You will work with designers, engineers, GIS management, and other team members to create and maintain accurate cartographic displays and GIS data.

  • Prepare drawings using ESRI ArcMap/ArcGIS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other electronic drawing packages as required
  • Assist in creating web-based mapping tools (ArcGIS Online) — webmaps, webapps, and dashboards for client/internal use
  • Place and maintain graphical features in client GIS systems (e.g., ArcFM, Intergraph FRAMME, Smallworld, G‑Tech)
  • Develop and maintain drawing standards (fonts, line weights, border sheets, naming conventions)
  • Document and prepare reports using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Fulcrum, Nitro Pro, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Assist with field data collection tools and tasks (GPS devices and post-processing)
  • Support maintenance and operation of client mapping and GIS applications by maintaining, reporting, and posting work or gathering data for input
  • Perform additional duties assigned by management

Qualifications

  • Required: High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Associate’s degree (AA) or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geospatial Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or related field — or equivalent technical experience
  • Experience: 0–2 years with GIS and/or CAD programs; experience in the utility/GIS industry is a plus
  • Technical skills:
    • Familiarity with ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro) and ArcGIS Online
    • Basic AutoCAD or MicroStation competency
    • Understanding of spatial concepts, projections, and query operations
    • Comfortable with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and basic database tools
  • Other skills:
    • Detail-oriented and self-motivated
    • Able to work independently and in a team
    • Strong communication skills for one-on-one and small-group interactions
  • Physical & work environment:
    • Regular sitting; frequent standing/walking; occasional stooping or reaching
    • Occasional outdoor work; moderate noise environment

Preferred Qualifications & Training

  • GIS certification or coursework is a plus
  • On-the-job training provided to learn client programs and processes
  • Willingness to learn client-specific construction standards and utility information systems

Compensation & Schedule

  • Employment type: Full-time
  • Location: Duluth, GA
  • Estimated pay: $74,828 per year (estimated)
  • Regular attendance and ability to meet deadlines required
