What You’ll Do

This Contract-to-Hire role supports electric distribution projects and joint-use / fiber make‑ready programs. You will split work between field data collection and office-based GIS/CAD tasks, providing accurate field information that drives engineering and design decisions.

• Use GIS and CAD tools to maintain and update data for electric distribution work of higher complexity and priority.
• Reference as-built drawings, work logs, and project documentation to reflect construction completed in the field.
• Identify and resolve data inconsistencies by coordinating updates with appropriate teams.
• Obtain, process, and manipulate GIS data at state and municipal levels to meet project needs.
• Participate in project meetings with teammates, clients, and stakeholders to review requirements and deliverables.
• Complete engineering-design tasks and prepare accurate deliverables for distribution and joint-use projects.
• Support storm response and emergency mobilization when required.
• Perform extensive field data collection for telecommunications attachments to electric distribution infrastructure (utility pole documentation, attachment details, etc.).
• Work primarily in two‑person field teams using iPads, field/GIS apps, measuring tools, and specialized equipment to collect measurements, photos, and attachment data.
• Ensure field data is complete, accurate, and clearly documented; flag unusual conditions for engineering review.
• Travel regularly across service territories in Virginia and North Carolina; expect weekly overnight travel when required.
• Operate and maintain rental vehicles responsibly during assignments and follow safety and storage requirements.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and ~2 years of relevant experience (internships may count toward experience).
• Comfortable performing both field and office work; field data collection is a core responsibility.
• Able to work safely outdoors in varied weather, vegetation, terrain, and roadside environments while carrying field equipment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting work and collaborating with teammates and clients.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook).
• Experience working in an Agile team environment: collaboration, openness to feedback, and delivering high-quality outputs.
• Willingness to travel regularly (including weekly overnight travel across VA and NC) and to support storm response when needed.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate rental vehicles as required.

Preferred / Additional Skills

• Experience with GIS platforms such as Esri ArcMap / ArcGIS / ArcGIS Online, ArcWeb services, ArcGIS Server, Smallworld, or QGIS.
• Experience with CAD tools such as Bentley MicroStation, AutoCAD, or Civil 3D.
• Background in utility client standards, electric distribution practices, telecommunications attachments, surveying, construction inspection, or similar outdoor technical roles.
• Comfortable learning and using mobile field-data collection applications and new digital tools.
• Interest in long-term career development in power delivery, joint‑use engineering, and electric distribution systems.

Work Environment & Logistics

• This is an on-site, field-heavy role based in Richmond, VA; approximately 90% field work, typically in two‑person teams.
• Field assignments require walking, climbing/working at roadside locations, and using electronic/mobile tools (iPads, GIS apps, cameras, measuring equipment).
• Regular regional travel across Virginia and North Carolina is expected; typical travel cadence may include weekly overnight stays (commonly Monday–Thursday).
• Office work includes GIS and CAD editing, deliverable preparation, project meetings, and Agile team collaboration.
• The role emphasizes safety, teamwork, training, mentorship, and opportunities to convert from temporary/contract to permanent employment based on performance.

Compensation & Benefits

• Pay: $23.50 per hour (range listed in source: $23.50 - $23.50/hr).
• Contract-to-hire classification; final compensation depends on experience, qualifications, location, and internal equity.
