What You’ll Do

This Contract-to-Hire role supports electric distribution and joint-use / fiber make-ready programs. Work is primarily field-based (about 90%) with office tasks to support GIS and CAD updates, engineering deliverables, and collaboration.

• Use GIS and CAD tools to support electric distribution projects and maintain accurate data for higher-complexity work.
• Reference as-built drawings, work logs, and documentation to update GIS with completed field construction.
• Identify and help resolve GIS data inconsistencies by coordinating with engineering and data teams.
• Obtain, process, and manipulate GIS data at state and municipal levels to support project needs.
• Collect extensive field data on utility poles and attached telecommunications equipment for joint-use and fiber make-ready evaluations.
• Record measurements, equipment details, attachment info, and photos using iPads and mobile field-data applications.
• Work as part of a two-person field crew; use measuring tools, GIS/fielding apps, proprietary software, and specialized instruments.
• Prepare timely, accurate engineering deliverables and communicate field observations to design personnel for review and decision-making.
• Participate in team and client meetings; work in an Agile environment and incorporate feedback to meet client standards.
• Support storm response and emergency mobilization when needed.
• Travel regularly across service territories in Virginia and North Carolina; weekly overnight travel is possible based on assignments.
• Operate and maintain rental vehicles responsibly during field assignments.

Qualifications

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree plus ~2 years of relevant experience (internships may count toward experience).
• Comfortable performing both field and office work; field data collection and extensive walking are core responsibilities.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting field work and collaborating with teammates and clients.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook).
• Experience working in an Agile team environment with openness to feedback and a focus on high-quality deliverables.
• Comfortable with regular travel in Virginia and North Carolina, including weekly overnight travel and use of rental vehicles.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather, vegetation, terrain, and roadside settings while carrying required equipment.
• Willingness to support storm response or emergency mobilization efforts.

Preferred

• Experience with GIS platforms such as Esri ArcMap / ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server, Smallworld, or QGIS.
• Experience with CAD tools such as Bentley MicroStation, AutoCAD, or Civil 3D.
• Knowledge of utility client standards and electric distribution practices.
• Background in utility field work, telecommunications, surveying, construction inspection, or similar outdoor technical roles.
• Familiarity with mobile field-data collection applications and new digital tools.

Compensation & Benefits

• Rate: $23.50 / hour (source pay range: $23.50 - $23.50 / hr).
• Employment type: Contract to Hire; fully onsite in Richmond, VA with frequent field travel.
