Geotech Engineer
The Staff Geotechnical Engineer role involves supporting geotechnical investigations and construction observation through fieldwork, laboratory testing, and report preparation. What You’ll Do
This position offers hands-on geotechnical experience combining fieldwork, lab testing, report preparation, client coordination, and construction observation. You will work with experienced engineers and drill crews on infrastructure, commercial development, transportation, and earthwork projects.
- Travel to project sites to support geotechnical investigations and construction observation activities
- Work alongside drill crews to observe subsurface explorations and obtain soil and rock samples
- Perform or assist with laboratory testing of geotechnical samples and document results
- Prepare and maintain boring logs, field documentation, and photo logs
- Assist in developing exploration plans, coordinating field activities, and scheduling
- Support proposal preparation, project scheduling, and traffic control planning as needed
- Coordinate project logistics and schedules with clients, contractors, and inspectors
- Assist in geotechnical report writing and interpretation of field and laboratory data
- Observe earthwork, grading, and construction activities to verify compliance with project requirements
- Use Microsoft Office and internal engineering software to document findings and prepare deliverables
- Work toward increased project responsibility and professional development under senior engineer mentorship
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil or Geotechnical focus preferred)
- 0–3+ years relevant geotechnical or civil engineering experience
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or Engineering Intern (EI) certification required
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to coordinate with clients and contractors
- Comfortable with field work, lifting sample equipment, and travel to project sites
Preferred / Nice to Have
- Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (or actively pursuing)
- Previous experience with soil/rock sampling, boring logs, and lab testing methods
- Familiarity with geotechnical report writing and common engineering software
Compensation & Benefits
- Entry-level pay range: $65,000 ($32/hr) to $75,000 ($36/hr)
- Senior-level pay range: $110,000 to $130,000+
- Competitive benefits depend on the hiring client and may include medical, dental, retirement plans, and paid time off. Specific benefit details will be provided by the hiring client during offer discussions.
Location & Travel
- Location: Cedar Rapids, IA (onsite and field-based work)
- Travel required to local/regional project sites; frequent day trips and occasional multi-day assignments possible
