Overview

Confidential Client, an employee-owned engineering firm, is hiring an entry-level Geologist (hybrid) to join its Duluth, MN office. This role supports assessment and remediation projects that investigate, evaluate, and help remediate contaminated sites. The position combines fieldwork and office-based tasks — ideal for candidates who want hands-on environmental field experience and technical report preparation.


What You’ll Do

Confidential Client’s Geologist will:

  • Support environmental site investigations for soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor.
  • Assist with monitoring well installation observation, sample collection, field screening, and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Contribute to aquifer test performance and analysis, site conceptual model development, and interpretation of geologic data.
  • Prepare drilling logs, geologic maps, cross-sections, figures, and draft technical report sections.
  • Coordinate field activities and logistics, work with contractors, and help track project milestones.
  • Communicate findings through clear field notes, status updates, emails, and data summaries to project managers and clients.

Work Arrangement & Travel

  • Hybrid: time split between the Duluth office and remote work as project needs allow.
  • Travel & fieldwork: up to ~50% travel and as much as ~75% fieldwork depending on seasonal and project demands.
  • Fieldwork is year-round and may include out-of-town assignments.

Physical & Safety Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

  • Conduct fieldwork in varied outdoor conditions (heat, cold, rain, rough terrain).
  • Lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Work individually in remote locations and perform extended periods of standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Use PPE and follow site safety protocols. Some assignments may require working on remediation sites or industrial facilities.
  • Complete an OSHA-mandated physical exam or client-requested drug screening where required.
  • Perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Required Qualifications & Core Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0 / 4.0.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to produce concise field notes, emails, and draft report sections.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and comfortable learning project-specific software.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Reliable, organized, safety-conscious, and able to work both independently and on multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred / Helpful Experience

The following are helpful but not required:

  • Master’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, or related field.
  • 1–3 years of environmental site experience (field investigations, remediation support).
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Fundamentals of Geology (FG) certification or the ability to obtain it within one year.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and remediation approaches.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Anticipated salary range: $65,000–$75,000 per year. Final compensation will depend on experience, education, and other compensable factors.
  • Exempt (salaried) classification under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Potential eligibility for discretionary cash bonus based on performance.
