Functional Academics Teacher
The Functional Academics Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to special education students, developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) in collaboration with parents and staff. This role involves adapting curricula, managing classroom behavior, conducting assessments, and ensuring compliance with educational regulations to foster students' intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth in a high-needs elementary school setting.

What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is seeking a Functional Academics Teacher to deliver classroom instruction and individualized programming for special education students. You will design and adapt curriculum, implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and work with families and school staff to support each student's academic, social, emotional, and physical development.
- Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop and implement IEPs via the ARD Committee process
- Deliver instructional, therapeutic, or skill-development programs and prepare documented lesson plans
- Assess student learning styles and use varied instructional strategies, materials, and technology to meet student needs
- Modify general education curriculum and support special education students in mainstream classes as appropriate
- Participate in ARD meetings, selection of instructional resources, and regular progress monitoring
- Supervise instructional aides and volunteers; assign and review their work
- Complete monthly SHARS billing and required documentation
What We’re Looking For
Required qualifications and experience are taken from the source posting — candidates must meet these to be considered:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignment
- Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience in special education
- Knowledge of special education needs, IEP/ARD processes, and curriculum adaptation for students with disabilities
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with parents, teachers, and specialists
Preferred skills and attributes
- Experience implementing behavior support and crisis intervention consistent with IEPs
- Ability to manage physical demands of the role (lifting, positioning, restraint when required) and maintain emotional control under stress
- Comfort with completing electronic reports and using instructional technology
Responsibilities & Working Conditions
- Manage classroom environment and student behavior according to IEPs; intervene in crisis situations as necessary
- Provide or supervise personal/medical care and feeding as specified in IEPs
- Attend staff meetings, participate in professional development, and follow district/school safety and emergency procedures
- Expect frequent walking, prolonged standing, frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, and occasional heavy lifting (45+ lbs) for student support and equipment handling
- Exposure to biological hazards is possible; maintain appropriate precautions
