Primary Responsibilities
This entry-level firmware role supports instrumentation, control, and electrical systems for safety-related and plant-control applications. Typical responsibilities include:
- Support firmware development for plant instrumentation and control systems, including safety-related reactor protection systems (signal acquisition, protection logic, diagnostics, equipment interfaces) and related non‑safety control or test systems.
- Implement and debug embedded firmware in C/C++ and assist with FPGA logic (VHDL/Verilog) where applicable, following approved requirements and coding practices.
- Contribute to firmware requirements, interface definitions, design descriptions, and maintain traceability between requirements, implementation, and verification evidence.
- Develop and execute unit, integration, and regression tests; record results, investigate anomalies, and support independent verification and validation activities.
- Assist with laboratory hardware bring-up and integration using schematics, datasheets, debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers under supervision.
- Use version control (e.g., Git), configuration management, code reviews, and change control to maintain reproducible builds and documented firmware releases.
- Collaborate with hardware, controls, systems, and test engineers to resolve interface issues and support system testing and commissioning.
- Learn and follow applicable quality assurance, software lifecycle, and cybersecurity procedures for safety‑critical systems; raise technical concerns and incorporate review feedback.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Candidates should demonstrate foundational embedded-engineering competence and an eagerness to grow in a disciplined engineering environment:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Entry-level position — suitable for recent graduates or applicants with 0–2 years of relevant experience (coursework, labs, capstones, internships, personal projects accepted).
- Foundational programming skills in C or C++, with practical experience developing and debugging software for microcontrollers or embedded processors.
- Understanding of digital logic and embedded concepts (memory, interrupts, timers, state machines, real-time behavior).
- Ability to read technical documentation and basic schematics; methodical troubleshooting and clear documentation of designs, tests, and issues.
- Familiarity with version control (Git) and basic software testing practices; willingness to work within documented development and quality processes.
- Strong attention to detail, clear communication, and ability to collaborate, ask questions, and learn from technical reviews.
- Preferred: exposure to VHDL/Verilog and FPGA tools, Python test automation, laboratory instruments, and interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART.
- Interest in safety‑critical engineering and energy technologies; familiarity with requirements traceability, verification & validation, or QA is a plus.
Compensation & Location
- Location: Onsite at the client’s Alameda, CA site (hybrid arrangements may apply as determined by the client).
- Salary range (California employees): $92,454 — $108,769 per year. This range represents the typical range or starting rate for candidates hired in California; actual pay will be determined based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and the market for the location.
Benefits (typical full-time offerings)
- Competitive compensation
- Medical, dental, and vision benefits for employees and dependents
- Paid vacation
- 401(k) and pre-tax flexible spending / commuter benefits (FSA), where provided
What Third-Party Recruiters Recommend (candidate tips)
- Showcase embedded projects (microcontroller, FPGA, test automation) and include links or short summaries of capstones or internships.
- Highlight practical debugging experience and familiarity with lab tools (oscilloscope, logic analyzer) and version control workflows.
- If you have relevant coursework or project summaries (VHDL/Verilog, SPI/I2C/UART interfaces, Python test scripts), include them on your resume or portfolio.
