What You’ll Do
- Assist in the design and analysis of fire alarm, fire suppression, and smoke control systems using engineering software to develop designs, specifications, and calculations that meet code and client requirements.
- Support project teams with planning, scheduling, documentation, and quality-control activities to meet deadlines and deliverables.
- Communicate technical information clearly with clients and internal stakeholders to gather requirements and report progress.
- Analyze low-to-medium complexity engineering tasks and propose practical solutions with guidance from senior engineers.
- Participate in multidisciplinary coordination with architects, engineers, and project managers to deliver integrated building solutions.
- Help maintain safety-focused design practices and assist in identifying and mitigating potential risks in fire protection systems.
- Stay current with fire protection industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practices; contribute to research and internal innovation efforts.
What You’ll Bring
Education & credentials
- Bachelor of Science (BS) in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent required.
- Prior internship or relevant experience in building design consulting preferred.
- EIT (Engineer in Training) license preferred.
- NICET Level I or II (Fire Alarm or Water-Based Systems Layout) preferred.
Technical & professional skills
- Knowledge of fire protection design principles including fire dynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics as they apply to alarm, suppression, and smoke control systems.
- Familiarity with hydraulic simulation and intelligibility/voice evacuation tools; basic BIM experience.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to collaborate in a team environment.
- Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Willingness to travel up to 5% with occasional overnight stays. Eagerness to learn and grow under mentorship and structured development programs.

Compensation & Location
- Salary range (base): $75,000–$83,000 per year.
- Work location: Urbandale, IA (primary). Travel: up to 5%.
- Sponsorship: not available. Compensation may vary by location and will be determined based on experience, education, skills, and certifications. Other rewards may include bonuses and stock ownership options; benefits details will be provided by the hiring organization.
