Field Service Engineer
The Field Service Engineer at Confidential Client is responsible for on-site commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of power and distribution transformers in utility, industrial, and hyperscale data center environments. This role requires extensive travel and serves as the primary technical representative at customer sites, ensuring equipment reliability, safety compliance, and strong customer relationships while supporting continuous improvement and emergency service needs.

About the Opportunity
Confidential Client is scaling field service support for its transformer product line that serves utility, industrial, and hyperscale data center customers. This Field Service Engineer — Transformers role is a hands-on, high-impact position: you will commission new units, troubleshoot in-service equipment, build customer relationships, and help create the field service playbook as one of the first dedicated transformer FSEs on the team.
This is a remote role with heavy travel expectations (typically 50–75% domestic, potentially occasional international assignments). Compensation includes base salary plus travel per diem, and standard field-service allowances (company vehicle or travel allowance, per diem, field equipment).
What You’ll Do
- Perform on-site installation oversight, startup, and commissioning of oil-filled and dry-type power/distribution transformers at customer facilities.
- Conduct acceptance testing per IEEE/IEC/NEMA and customer specifications prior to energization.
- Support equipment energization planning, outage coordination, and site readiness reviews with customers, EPCs, and project teams.
- Read and work from single-line diagrams, winding/vector diagrams, control schematics, and equipment nameplate data.
- Execute transformer tests: Turns Ratio (TTR), winding resistance, insulation resistance (IR/PI), power factor/dissipation factor, SFRA.
- Collect and interpret Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) and oil analysis results to assess transformer condition.
- Perform relay and protection testing where transformers interface with protective schemes.
- Diagnose OLTC/LTC issues, cooling systems, and control/monitoring equipment; perform corrective maintenance and repairs.
- Document test results and deliver clear, customer-ready technical reports.
- Respond to emergency service calls and participate in an on-call rotation when required.
- Prepare material lists, technical quotations, and scopes of work for follow-on service engagements.
- Feed field observations (failure modes, installation issues, design feedback) into NCR/SCAR and continuous improvement processes.
- Follow all EHS, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and permit-to-work procedures; maintain required certifications and complete ongoing safety training.
Where You’ll Work & Travel
- Remote role with heavy travel (50–75% typical). Travel includes domestic customer sites and may occasionally include international assignments.
- Field environments may include heights, confined spaces, outdoor conditions, and industrial sites. The role requires physical ability to lift/move equipment components and work safely in these settings.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field — OR equivalent experience (military electrical/electronics training, associate degree plus relevant field experience).
- 2+ years hands-on field experience with power/distribution transformers, switchgear, or related power delivery equipment. (Strong entry-level candidates with internships/training may be considered.)
- Practical knowledge of transformer testing methods: TTR, insulation resistance, DGA/oil analysis, power factor testing.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and winding/vector diagrams.
- Willingness and ability to travel 50–75%.
- Valid driver’s license; ability to obtain/maintain a passport when required.
- Ability to work in industrial field environments and perform physical tasks safely.
Preferred / Bonus Skills
- Experience with OEM transformer platforms (ABB, Siemens, GE, Hitachi Energy, Powell, ERMCO) or equivalent.
- Familiarity with On-Load Tap Changers (OLTC), cooling systems (ONAN/ONAF/OFAF), and bushings.
- NETA certification or progress toward NETA Level II/III.
- Experience with protective relay testing and interpretation.
- Data center or mission-critical facility experience.
- Prior experience at a transformer OEM, utility, or independent testing/service organization.
