What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is seeking an entry-level Family Services Specialist I to join a local social services team in Surry, VA. In this role you will work under close supervision while training across program areas such as Adult/Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, Foster Care/Adoption, Child Care, and Employment Services. You will perform routine to journey-level casework and support the delivery of services to families and individuals in the community.

• Carry out casework activities consistent with federal, state, and local rules and Confidential Client policies
• Interview and assess client needs, including education/skill levels, abilities, interests, and support systems
• Inform clients of program rules and client rights, develop and implement service plans
• Provide case management to monitor client progress and compliance
• Coordinate services with other agencies and participate in multidisciplinary teams
• Track program expenditures, prepare budget estimates, and ensure payment for services where applicable
• Maintain program waiting lists, complete required planning and reporting, and serve as a community resource
• Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies in child/adult protective services and/or foster care

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field; OR
• A Bachelor’s degree in any field plus a minimum of two years of appropriate, related experience in a Human Services area (per Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia).

Required skills and abilities

• Basic knowledge of social work principles and human behavior
• Skill operating a motor vehicle and using a personal computer with common office software
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to interview, assess, counsel, refer clients, and develop service plans
• Good judgment in applying laws, policies, and regulations
• Ability to plan and manage work activities, maintain records, and prepare reports
• Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships

Preferred

• BSW or MSW degree and possession of a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license are desirable.

• All applicants are subject to DMV/driving record checks, Central Registry (CPS) checks, and criminal history searches. Investigations may include fingerprint checks (state police, FBI), local agency checks, employment verification, reference checks, and verification of education when relevant.
• Employees must be willing to report to community emergency shelters during natural disasters or emergencies.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
