Family Services Specialist I
The Family Services Specialist I is an entry-level social services role responsible for performing supervised casework in areas such as adult and child protective services, foster care, adoption, and employment services. What You’ll Do
- Perform routine-to-journey level casework under supervision across program areas such as Adult/Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, Foster Care/Adoption, Child Care, and Employment Services.
- Interview, assess and document client needs (education/skills, supports, risk factors) and develop/implement service plans.
- Interpret and apply laws, policies and regulations related to assigned programs.
- Provide ongoing case management to monitor compliance and outcomes.
- Coordinate and refer clients to internal and external services; participate in multi-disciplinary and interagency teams.
- Track program expenditures, prepare budget estimates, and ensure payment for services as required.
- Maintain waiting lists, complete federal/state/local reporting and planning requirements.
- Serve as a resource to clients and the community in assigned program areas.
- Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies in child/adult protective services and/or foster care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field OR a Bachelor’s degree in any field with at least two (2) years of related experience in Human Services (per Virginia Board of Social Services requirements).
- Some knowledge of social work principles and human behavior.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to interview, assess, counsel and refer clients; develop and implement service plans; and make sound judgments within laws/policies.
- Skill operating a motor vehicle and using a personal computer with standard software.
- Ability to plan/manage workload, prepare records and reports, and establish effective working relationships.
Preferred
- BSW or MSW degree.
- Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license.
Compensation & Schedule
- Estimated salary: $75,182 per year (estimated).
- Employment type: Full-time.
- Role requires flexibility for after-hours on-call coverage for emergencies in protective services and foster care.
- Actual compensation, benefits and work schedule will be determined by the confidential client and local agency compensation plan.
