What You’ll Do

This entry-level Family Services Specialist I role supports casework across programs such as Adult/Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, Foster Care/Adoption, Child Care, and Employment Services. Working under close supervision, you will:

  • Interview and assess client needs (education, skills, supports, barriers)
  • Inform clients of program rules, rights, and available services
  • Develop, document, and implement service plans
  • Coordinate with partner agencies and participate in multidisciplinary teams
  • Serve as a community resource and make referrals to appropriate services
  • Provide on-call coverage and respond to emergencies in child/adult protective services and/or foster care

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct client interviews and needs assessments
  • Create and track service/case plans and documentation
  • Present cases and coordinate service delivery with supervisors and external partners
  • Maintain accurate case records, reports, and correspondence
  • Make sound, policy-compliant decisions and escalate when required
  • Manage a caseload while balancing client communication and administrative duties

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field OR a Bachelor’s degree in any field plus a minimum of two years of relevant human services experience, as required by applicable state regulations
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle for work-related travel
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and case-management software
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interview, assess, counsel, and refer clients to resources
  • Ability to manage workload, prepare reports, and maintain accurate records

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW)
  • Commonwealth of Virginia social worker license (or equivalent where required)
  • Prior experience in child protective services, adult protective services, foster care, or employment services

  • Knowledge of social work principles, human behavior, and community resources
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in crisis situations
  • Strong problem-solving and sound judgment within legal/policy frameworks
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with clients and partner agencies
  • Commitment to staying current on trends and best practices in social services

Compensation & Location

  • Location: Front Royal, VA (this posting is for a position based in Front Royal, Virginia)
  • Estimated pay: $60,413 per year (estimated)
