What You’ll Do
This entry-level Family Services Specialist I (Adult Protective Services) role supports clients in need of protective and social services under close supervision, with structured training and a path to full-performance Family Services Specialist II.
You will:
- Interpret and apply relevant laws, policies and regulations within assigned program areas.
- Monitor, coordinate and administer assigned programs, including Adult Protective Services.
- Interview and assess client needs (education/skills, abilities, supports) and develop service plans.
- Provide case management and follow-up to monitor compliance and outcomes.
- Coordinate with other agencies and participate on interagency/multi-disciplinary teams.
- Maintain program records, track expenditures, prepare budget estimates, and complete required planning and reporting.
- Manage waiting lists and referrals; serve as a community resource for clients.
- Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies in child/adult protective services and/or foster care when assigned.
- Telework as needed and participate in required community outreach activities, including occasional evening events.
Who We’re Looking For
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field — OR — a Bachelor’s degree in any field plus at least two years of relevant Human Services experience (per Virginia administrative code).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the agency driving record standard.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (oral and written), interview and assess clients, develop/implement service plans, and exercise sound judgment within policy frameworks.
- Basic computer skills and comfort using case management systems.
Preferred:
- BSW or MSW degree and/or Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license.
Compensation & Location
- Estimated salary: $65,657 per year (estimated figure provided by source).
- Location: Bedford, VA — role is listed with TELECOMMUTE/remote capability; candidates should be able to work in the Bedford area as required.
- Employment type: Full-time.
Background Checks & Special Requirements
- Final hire is contingent on satisfactory results of required screenings: criminal history background search, Central Registry search, DMV/driving record check, and possibly fingerprint (State Police/FBI), education and employment verification, and drug screening.
- This position falls under Virginia Code requirements for fingerprinting and Central Registry checks.
- Employee must be willing to work in community emergency shelters during disasters and may participate in an on-call rotation outside normal business hours.
