Position Overview

The Environmental Specialist supports construction operations by ensuring compliance with environmental permits, regulations, and contract requirements on heavy civil construction projects. You will work closely with project management, field supervision, regulatory agencies, and environmental consultants to identify environmental risks, implement mitigation measures, and maintain compliance throughout all phases of construction on projects in the South Central District and regional transportation and infrastructure programs.


What You’ll Do

  • Lead and maintain environmental compliance with permits, regulations, and project-specific requirements during construction.
  • Conduct environmental inspections, monitoring, and reporting for stormwater, water quality, wetlands, erosion and sediment control, and other sensitive resources.
  • Identify environmental risks and implement mitigation measures to minimize impacts to natural resources, communities, and project operations.
  • Develop, update, and maintain environmental plans, permits, compliance documentation, and project tracking systems.
  • Coordinate with project management, superintendents, craft personnel, clients, consultants, and regulatory agencies to integrate environmental requirements into construction activities.
  • Provide on-site environmental training and technical guidance to project teams to promote awareness and continuous compliance.
  • Support permitting activities, agency coordination, regulatory inspections, and client reporting.
  • Monitor environmental performance, track compliance metrics, investigate incidents, and communicate corrective actions to project leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Natural Resources, Ecology, or a related field.
  • 1+ years of environmental compliance experience supporting construction, infrastructure, transportation, marine, or industrial projects.
  • Working knowledge of environmental permitting and regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of construction operations and field activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and environmental data tracking systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Preferred experience:
    • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP)
    • Erosion and sediment control
    • Wetland protection and mitigation
    • Environmental inspections and reporting
    • Water quality monitoring

  • Follow oral and written instructions, safety procedures, and site policies.
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends as required; may travel or work at varying project locations and site conditions.
  • This position is travel-based; relocation may not be required but travel on rotations/turnarounds is expected.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Estimated pay: $35,608 per year (estimated).
