What You’ll Do

This entry-level Environmental Specialist I role supports public-health protection by performing biomedical waste and temporary-tattoo facility inspections, complaint investigations, permitting work, and basic administrative duties. You will work in the field and in the office to ensure compliance with state codes and to protect community health.

• Conduct biomedical waste and tattoo facility inspections and investigations under the supervision of an Environmental Supervisor II.
• Inspect facilities, monitor operations, collect data, and perform field evaluations to check regulatory compliance.
• Respond to permitting requests: provide applications, advise on program requirements, issue permits, and maintain permit records.
• Investigate complaints (e.g., sanitation issues, unlicensed activities, improperly disposed needles/SHARPS and biological material).
• Participate in temporary tattoo events and other community outreach or inspection activities as required.
• Prepare clear inspection reports, enter and maintain data in program databases, and submit timely administrative reports.
• Provide excellent customer service — answer questions by phone, explain program requirements, and coordinate with other agencies when needed.
• Assist with fee collection, attend meetings, and participate in training and professional development.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Minimum requirements for consideration:

• Valid current driver’s license and reliable transportation to perform inspections throughout Hillsborough County.
• Ability to stand for extended periods during inspections and perform fieldwork.
• At least six months of customer service experience.
• Basic computer skills and the ability to enter and manage data accurately.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare technical reports.
• Ability to follow applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to environmental public health programs.
• Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and ability to work independently while managing time effectively.
• Ability to interact with the public in a tactful, courteous manner and to establish effective working relationships.
• Willingness to participate in required background checks and drug screening as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

The following are desirable but not required:

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or a related Physical or Biological Science (with minimum required coursework).
• Certification to perform food inspections in Florida (Certified Environmental Health Professional, Registered Sanitarian, or Registered Environmental Health Specialist).
• One year of experience working for a public health agency within the last five years.
• One year of customer service experience.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly desired.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary range: $36,317.26 – $57,367.75 per year (range provided by the client).
