About the Role
This entry-level Environmental Specialist I role supports a Confidential Client public health team in Hillsborough County, working from the office located at 1105 E. Kennedy Blvd, Tampa, FL 33602. The primary responsibilities include conducting biomedical waste and tattoo facility inspections, investigating complaints, enforcing public health codes, maintaining records and databases, and communicating program requirements to the public and regulated facilities. This role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task in a field and office environment.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct biomedical waste and tattoo facility inspections and investigations to determine compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Inspect facilities, monitor operations, collect data, and perform field evaluations.
- Respond to permitting requests, provide application materials, issue permits, and maintain permit databases.
- Investigate complaints such as sanitation concerns, unlicensed activities, and improper disposal of needles and other sharps.
- Participate in temporary tattoo event inspections as required.
- Prepare inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and submit administrative reports on time.
- Collaborate with supervisors, other agencies, and community partners.
- Provide clear guidance to business owners and members of the public regarding applicable statutes and codes.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of basic physical or natural science terminology, principles, and analytical techniques.
- Understanding of public health principles and environmental health concepts.
- Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze, and interpret scientific or technical data.
- Skill in preparing technical inspection reports and documentation.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to deal tactfully with the public.
- Proficiency with personal computers and basic office software.
- Ability to apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to environmental programs.
- Ability to work independently, organize tasks, and manage time effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to maintain effective working relationships.
- Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid, current driver’s license.
- Reliable transportation to perform inspections throughout Hillsborough County.
- Ability to stand for extended periods while performing inspections.
- Minimum of six months of customer service experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or a Physical or Biological Science with required major coursework.
- Certification to perform food inspections in the State of Florida (for example, Certified Environmental Health Professional, Registered Sanitarian, or Registered Environmental Health Specialist).
- One year of experience working for a public health agency within the past five years.
- One year of customer service experience.
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are highly desired.

- Salary range: $36,317.26 - $39,603.33 per year.

Working Conditions & Additional Requirements
