Role Overview

The Confidential Client is hiring an Entry Level Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician in Ithaca, NY. This entry-level, full-time field role provides hands-on training in utility locating, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and survey fieldwork. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to safely identify, map, and document underground utilities for land surveying and engineering projects.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist experienced SUE technicians with locating, identifying, and mapping underground utilities.
  • Learn to operate and maintain SUE equipment, including electromagnetic locators and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
  • Participate in field investigations, utility designating, records research, and onsite data collection.
  • Read and interpret basic utility maps, plans, sketches, and project drawings with guidance.
  • Support land surveying and multidisciplinary field data collection tasks.
  • Prepare accurate daily field notes, sketches, photographs, and project documentation.
  • Enter, organize, and maintain field data using electronic systems and project software.
  • Help review SUE deliverables and field information for accuracy and completeness.
  • Attend project scheduling, coordination, and safety meetings.
  • Maintain SUE equipment, assist with inventory and routine maintenance.
  • Represent the Confidential Client professionally when interacting with clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Perform other field and office tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate/Bachelor coursework in land surveying, engineering technology, geology, environmental science, forestry, construction, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Strong interest in subsurface utility engineering (SUE), utility locating, and surveying.
  • Willingness to learn technical field equipment and follow safety procedures.
  • Basic ability to read maps, drawings, or plans and a commitment to develop technical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow direction from senior staff.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicles.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and perform physically demanding tasks (lifting up to 50 lbs).
  • Willingness to travel locally and work occasional overtime when needed.
  • Basic computer skills; willingness to learn project-specific software and data-collection systems.

Preferred (Nice-to-Have) Skills

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Carlson, InRoads, or similar software.
  • Prior experience in surveying, construction, utilities, GIS, or environmental fieldwork.
  • OSHA or other safety certifications.
  • Previous exposure to GPR or electromagnetic locating equipment.

Compensation & Schedule

  • Hourly pay: $24.00 - $30.00 per hour (range provided by the Confidential Client; final offer will reflect experience, education, and location).
  • Employment type: Full-time, field-based with some office work and local travel.
  • Flexible work schedule options may be available depending on project needs.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Frequent outdoor fieldwork in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Physical activity may include walking uneven terrain, standing for long periods, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Field assignments may require travel between local project sites and occasional overtime.
