Position overview
This role supports substation design and delivery for high-voltage projects (69kV–500kV). The Confidential Client is hiring a motivated entry-level Substation Engineer on a contract-to-hire basis. The role is fully onsite in Edgewood / Orlando, FL and includes structured mentorship, technical training, and collaboration across electrical, structural, and civil teams.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in the design of high‑voltage substations (69kV–500kV), including layouts, protection & control systems, grounding, and civil/structural considerations.
- Prepare and update detailed engineering drawings, schematics, one-line/three-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams.
- Perform electrical analyses: short‑circuit, load flow, voltage drop, and grounding studies.
- Support preparation of technical specifications, bills of materials, and construction packages.
- Assist in writing engineering reports, design narratives, and client deliverables.
- Maintain organized project documentation and follow quality-control processes.
- Participate in project meetings with clients, utilities, and internal stakeholders.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and environmental teams to ensure integrated designs.
- Learn from experienced engineers and project managers through mentorship and formal on‑the‑job training.
- Keep current with industry standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC) and applicable utility requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation in design and execution.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
- Completed coursework in Power Systems Analysis, Power Systems Protection, Energy Delivery Systems, and Power Labs.
- Experience using AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate on multi‑discipline teams.
Preferred / additional qualifications
- EIT certification or progress toward EIT/PE is a plus.
- Master’s degree in Engineering is a plus.
- Experience with 3D modeling tools (Revit, Civil 3D, Inventor) is beneficial.
- Knowledge of construction practices, constructability reviews, proposal writing, estimating, scheduling, or project controls is a plus.
Compensation & benefits
- Hourly pay range: $33.65 – $38.46 per hour (Contract to Hire). Actual pay offered will depend on experience, qualifications, and other job‑related factors.

Work environment & location
- Fully onsite role with the engineering team based in the Lake Mary / Orlando area (Edgewood / Orlando, FL). The team of ~20 engineers, designers, and drafters will be relocating to a larger Lake Mary office in the coming months.
- Strong support for professional development and encouragement to obtain EIT/PE credentials under PE supervision.
