Responsibilities

This entry-level Structural Engineer will support structural design and field activities for industrial and commercial projects. Daily work includes hand calculations, computer analysis models, drafting, and coordination with other disciplines.

  • Apply knowledge of materials and construction techniques across a range of structural systems
  • Perform hand calculations and build computer analysis models for structural design tasks
  • Determine applicable building codes and locate local/site-specific amendments
  • Document gravity, wind, and seismic design loads
  • Design and detail common framing systems (steel, composite steel, joists)
  • Design and estimate common foundation systems (spread footings, drilled piers)
  • Estimate foundation types/sizes and preliminary steel members
  • Coordinate structural scope with other disciplines and review geotechnical reports
  • Design mat slabs for process tanks, vessels, and silos
  • Design pipe bridges and perform quantity takeoffs from structural plans
  • Contact potential bidders for preliminary budget estimates and review submittals
  • Field measure existing structures and conduct site inspections and condition assessments
  • Draft sketches, contract drawings, and specifications using AutoCAD (Revit experience helpful)
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and calculations for conformity and quality assurance
  • Estimate construction costs using quantity takeoffs and historical data
  • Research structural materials and best practices and support talent growth in the team

Required Education, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering
  • 0–3 years of relevant structural experience or schooling (industrial and commercial structures)
  • Experience (or coursework) performing calculations and creating analysis models for structural designs
  • Experience (or coursework) producing structural drafting, contract drawings, and specifications using AutoCAD and/or Revit
  • Familiarity with RAM Structural System / RAM Elements is a plus
  • EIT / FE desirable
  • Experience with structural analysis software
  • Strong planning, organization, and communication skills
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed (approximately 15 days/year)

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally
  • Periodic site visits and fieldwork
