What You’ll Do
This entry-level laboratory role supports research and field activities focused on wet chemistry, soil science, and environmental sampling in support of regulatory and research programs in the RTP/Durham, NC area.
- Perform sample collection and laboratory analyses during experiments (wet chemistry and soil sample work).
- Operate laboratory and field equipment; observe and record events that may affect results; recommend modifications to experimental designs or equipment configurations.
- Maintain, calibrate, and repair experimental equipment and ancillary devices (pumps, fans, controllers, etc.).
- Develop and execute test plans to meet research objectives; evaluate data and prepare clear, accurate reports with tables, charts, graphs, and appendices documenting results and data quality.
- Conduct experiments evaluating sampling (surface and air) and analytical techniques for chemical, biological, and radiological agents, including fate-and-transport studies.
- Modify bench, pilot, and full-scale setups and install test equipment as required by research objectives.
- Support field evaluations of pollutant collection, measurement, and monitoring instruments; maintain field evaluation facilities when needed.
- Work collaboratively with project teams and follow established standard operating procedures and quality-control protocols.
Qualifications
Required:
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Natural Resources, or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum 6 months of laboratory experience (wet chemistry or environmental lab experience preferred).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
Preferred Skills & Attributes
- Experience with wet-chemistry techniques, soil sample processing, or environmental monitoring.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality and documentation.
- Good written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and coordinating within teams.
- Analytical problem-solving and ability to adapt in a fast-paced research environment.
- Comfortable working both in the lab and in field settings; able to perform occasional travel for non-local field evaluations when required.
Compensation & Benefits
- Estimated base salary: $74,524 per year (estimated).

Work Location & Travel
- Primary work location: Durham / RTP area, NC (local field work expected).
