What You’ll Do

This entry-level scientist role in Durham, NC is a hands-on laboratory position supporting environmental research and testing in the RTP area. You will follow established procedures while assisting with experiments, data collection, equipment operation, and basic maintenance.

• Perform sample collection and laboratory analyses during experiments (wet chemistry and soil testing).
• Operate lab equipment, record observations, and recommend minor modifications to improve experiments.
• Maintain and repair experimental equipment and ancillary devices (pumps, fans, controllers, etc.) as needed.
• Prepare clear, accurate reports summarizing methods, tables, charts, graphs, and conclusions.
• Develop and help execute test plans that meet research objectives; evaluate and document results.
• Support experiments related to sampling and analytical techniques for chemical, biological, and radiological agents and studies of fate and transport.
• Install, modify, and configure bench, pilot, and larger-scale test setups.
• Occasionally conduct or support field evaluations of pollutant collection, measurement, and monitoring instruments (primarily local; occasional travel may be required).

Required Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Natural Resources, or a related scientific discipline.
• Minimum 6 months of laboratory experience (academic, internship, or professional).
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred / Helpful Skills

• Experience with wet chemistry techniques and soil science preferred.
• Hands-on experience operating and maintaining laboratory instruments and pumps.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Compensation & Benefits

• Estimated base salary: $73,887 per year (estimated).
