What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is seeking an entry-level Materials Sample Prep Chemist to join their lab team in Syracuse, NY. This hands-on role focuses on preparing and analyzing solid samples using Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry (GDMS), producing final analytical reports, and supporting instrument troubleshooting and lab compliance.
- Prepare a variety of solid samples (metals, powders, ceramics, coatings) using mechanical and chemical techniques
- Operate and perform GDMS analyses on prepared samples
- Produce accurate, clear analytical reports and data summaries
- Troubleshoot GDMS workflows and assist with minor instrument maintenance
- Follow ISO 27001 information security requirements and standard lab safety procedures
- Coordinate with colleagues across shifts to support continuous lab operations
Qualifications — Required
- Bachelor’s degree in materials science, chemistry, or a related discipline
- Minimum 2 years of relevant laboratory experience
- Practical experience with analytical instrumentation (examples: microscopes, ICP-OES, ICP-MS)
- Strong ability to plan, prioritize, and document multiple tasks
- U.S. Person status as defined by ITAR regulations (required)
- Comfortable working the posted night shift: 3:30 PM–2:00 AM, Monday–Thursday
- Good interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Direct experience with Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry (GDMS)
- Experience producing formal analytical reports for technical audiences
- Prior work in ISO-certified laboratory environments
- Familiarity with sample mounting, polishing, or coating techniques for solid materials

- Night shift schedule: Monday through Thursday, 3:30 PM – 2:00 AM
Compensation
- Estimated salary: $44,263 per year (estimated). Exact pay offered will depend on experience and qualifications.
