Position Overview

Confidential Client is seeking an Entry Level GIS Technician to support utility and distribution design projects. This hands-on role focuses on preparing accurate CAD and GIS deliverables, assisting with cost estimates and engineering calculations, and collecting field data as required. The position is contract-to-hire and based in Canton, CT.

Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed manual or computer-assisted design and construction drawings with a high level of accuracy.
• Develop and update design documents in line with drawings, specifications, and company/industry standards.
• Assist in preparing cost estimates, material requisitions, and technical specifications to support project execution.
• Support engineering calculations and technical evaluations to validate design decisions.
• Coordinate equipment deliveries and design milestones to meet project schedules.
• Collect and verify on-site field data to support design activities and assess equipment performance.
• Apply knowledge in one or more technical areas (e.g., distribution engineering, substation/transmission design, civil/mechanical, instrumentation and control, protective relaying, surveying, GIS/mapping, CADD).
• Work independently on multiple design-related tasks while collaborating with engineers and project stakeholders.

Essential Skills

• Knowledge of practices and procedures in at least one of: electrical engineering, distribution engineering, substation/transmission design, civil or mechanical engineering, instrumentation and control, protective relaying, surveying, GIS/mapping, or CADD.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar CAD tools.
• Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and industry standards for design work.
• Experience supporting cost estimates, specifications, and material requisitions.
• Ability to support engineering calculations and technical documentation.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities with minimal supervision.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills; demonstrated technical aptitude and initiative.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, environmental sciences, engineering technology, or a related technical field preferred — or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 0–1 years’ experience in utility or electrical distribution design environments is acceptable for this entry-level role.

Work Environment

• Primarily office-based work using AutoCAD, CAD/CADD systems, and GIS tools.
• Occasional fieldwork to collect on-site data or observe equipment performance.
• After training, potential for flexible hours and up to two days per week remote work, subject to business needs and leadership approval.
• Collaborative environment working closely with engineers, designers, and technical teams.

• Contract to Hire — Onsite in Canton, CT (Canton, Connecticut).

Pay & Benefits

• Pay range: $23.50 - $24.00 per hour.
• Actual compensation offered will depend on qualifications, experience, job knowledge, and other job-related factors.
