Overview

Confidential Client is seeking an Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineer in Philadelphia, PA. This is a field-focused, hands-on role ideal for a recent civil or geotechnical engineering graduate who wants to build practical experience with subsurface investigations, construction observation, and technical reporting on large-scale projects.


What You’ll Do

  • Assist with planning and executing geotechnical field investigations: log borings and test pits, collect soil and rock samples, perform field tests (e.g., SPT, CPT where applicable), and record site data.
  • Observe and document foundation and earthwork construction to verify conformance with design and contract documents.
  • Prepare drilling and test pit logs, field investigation dailies, chain-of-custody forms, and other standard field documentation.
  • Perform file reviews, site reconnaissance, and basic geologic and geotechnical data searches.
  • Identify routine field and laboratory problems and implement practical solutions with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Communicate clearly and promptly with supervisors about site conditions, discrepancies, and safety concerns.
  • Contribute to geotechnical engineering reports and support technical analyses for foundations, earthwork, and site characterization.
  • Perform other field and office tasks as assigned to support project delivery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering required.
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience (internships, co-ops, or entry-level roles welcome).
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred.
  • EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification or current registration for the FE exam preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and sound analytical, multitasking, and judgment capabilities.
  • Willingness to spend the majority of work hours in the field; reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to work independently on-site and collaboratively in project teams.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

  • Coursework or hands-on experience with SPT, CPT, soil classification, permeability testing, consolidation, and basic laboratory testing protocols.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical software and standard reporting formats.
  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering or interest in pursuing an advanced degree.
  • OSHA or other safety training applicable to fieldwork.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Estimated base pay: $82,376 per year (estimated).

Location & Work Schedule

  • Position is based in Philadelphia, PA. The role requires frequent on-site fieldwork across project locations in the region. Some office and report-preparation time is expected.
