Overview

Confidential Client (via Careertakes) is seeking an Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineer to join its engineering team based in Germantown, MD (hybrid work model). This is a full-time, early-career role focused on geotechnical investigations, analyses, and design support for water and infrastructure projects. The position includes fieldwork, laboratory coordination, technical reporting, and collaboration with multi-discipline teams.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, executing, and overseeing geotechnical field exploration and laboratory testing programs.
  • Evaluate subsurface conditions to determine soil and bedrock engineering properties and parameters.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses for shallow foundations (bearing capacity, sliding, settlement).
  • Conduct seepage and stability analyses for dams, levees, tunnels, and natural/man-made slopes.
  • Assist with design of deep foundations for buildings, bridges, tanks, and other structures.
  • Support pavement, retaining wall, and sheet pile design efforts.
  • Perform liquefaction analyses, site-class assessments, and seismic-hazard evaluations.
  • Prepare geotechnical data reports, design reports, technical memoranda, and specifications.
  • Coordinate with in-house engineering disciplines (structural, water, environmental, etc.).
  • Oversee subsurface investigation programs and uphold the client’s safety culture.
  • Participate in construction oversight and geotechnical exploration activities.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as project needs require (up to ~50%).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with strong coursework in geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, and foundation engineering (or demonstrated equivalency of education/experience).
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and ability to pass Motor Vehicle Records review as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 50% of the time.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship (note: sponsorship is not available for this role).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical focus.
  • EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification or pursuit thereof.
  • Familiarity with industry software such as AutoCAD, gINT, MathCAD, OpenGround, or similar.
  • Strong attention to schedules, budgets, and project coordination.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: USD 68,000 — USD 85,000 per year (range provided by client).
  • Benefits may include medical, dental, vision, life/AD&D, disability, paid time off, retirement savings plan, and other offerings depending on employment status.
  • Offered compensation will be based on education, qualifications, experience, and work location.

Work Model, Travel & Additional Details

  • Work location model: Hybrid (Germantown, MD-based role).
  • This role is expected to begin immediately or in Spring 2027.
  • Confidential Client is hosting an invitation-only hiring event in Philadelphia on October 7–8, 2026 (networking mixer and interviews). Attendance at recruiting events is optional and by invitation when applicable.
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • Sponsorship for U.S. employment authorization is not available now or in the future for this position.
  • All newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at a client office as a condition of employment.
  • Travel to project sites, client meetings, and occasional conferences is required.
