Position Overview

This is an Entry-Level Field/Office Engineer role supporting heavy civil and underground foundations projects for a Confidential Client. The role blends hands-on field engineering with office-based tasks such as estimating, quantity takeoffs, and project recordkeeping. This is a full-time position based in Prichard, AL, with regular travel and relocation as projects require.

Team & District Overview

The Confidential Client’s foundations team self-performs complex geotechnical and underground work across North America. The team delivers cost-efficient, constructible solutions using specialty equipment and experienced personnel. Entry-level engineers will gain exposure to field operations, estimating, and project support on projects related to transportation, water/wastewater, power, mining, and telecommunications.

What You’ll Do — Core Responsibilities

Field Engineering

• Assist in interpretation of drawings and specifications for field crews and craft supervision
• Perform quantity calculations by taking measurements and tracking percent complete for installed work
• Support preparation of work plans and work packages
• Assist with field surveying, layout, elevations, control points, and compiling as-built data
• Compile, process, and confirm daily labor timesheets
• Assist in preparation of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
• Provide construction solutions related to underground tunneling and foundations operations
• Participate in jobsite safety reviews, toolbox talks, and safety training
• Order and schedule material deliveries; plan and coordinate work groups on site
• Provide field supervision support and monitor subcontractor operations

Office Engineering

• Perform material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and contract documents
• Complete basic engineering calculations and drafting to support field operations
• Prepare submittals, transmittals, and routine correspondence for customers, vendors, and regulators
• Support purchase order and subcontract preparation as directed
• Maintain project recordkeeping: daily reports, photos, RFIs, and memoranda
• Enter data into job-cost systems and assist in cost-report reviews with site management
• Assist in generating change orders and as-built documentation for Project Manager review

Estimating

• Assist in reviewing historical data and production rates to support bid preparation
• Complete plan/specification reviews and identify project risk areas for senior estimators
• Perform material and quantity takeoffs consistent with bid documents

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mining, Mechanical, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field
• Previous construction or mining experience preferred but not required
• Strong desire to build a career in underground/foundations construction
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
• Proficiency with Excel and Word
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
• Strong work ethic, ability to work independently and in teams
• Critical thinking and planning skills

Compensation & Benefits

• Base compensation: $82,000/yr – $88,000/yr (actual pay will vary based on experience, education, skill set, and location)
