What You’ll Do

This role is an entry-level Electrical Engineer position supporting Substation Integration and Automation (SIA) for transmission and distribution substations. You will develop and deliver configuration and application files that support SCADA, remote engineering access, and secure substation data transfer for capital projects. Work with field and operations teams to help implement, commission, and maintain safe, reliable substation systems.

• Create detailed configuration files that follow established standards and best engineering practices.
• Deliver configuration files and provide engineering field support during construction and commissioning.
• Support operations and construction teams to maintain a reliable, safe, and secure power system.
• Design and document SIA schemes that support dependable power system operations.
• Analyze digital communication circuits used for substation automation and SCADA.
• Apply practical knowledge of substation equipment in SIA design and configuration.
• Produce project documentation, reports, and presentations using Microsoft Office tools.
• Plan project tasks, set milestones, and monitor progress to meet schedules.
• Prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects effectively.
• Participate in storm restoration and provide engineering support during critical system events.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical challenges and recommend cost‑effective solutions.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards, processes, and tools.

What We’re Looking For

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with emphasis in Electrical Engineering.
• Basic understanding of electrical power system theory.
• Relevant coursework such as Power System Analysis, Protective Relaying, Control Systems, and Digital Electronics.
• Ability to create and manage configuration files for SCADA, SIA, and substation automation systems.
• Knowledge of substation equipment function and operational application.
• Ability to read and analyze digital communication circuits.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong computer literacy and ability to learn engineering/technical software.
• Good time management, organizational skills, and ability to handle multiple priorities.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to document engineering work professionally.
• Demonstrated work ethic (including prior work or internship experience).

Preferred / Helpful Experience

• Working knowledge of digital communications protocols (DNP, SES92, SELFM).
• Familiarity with CAD tools for engineering design and documentation.
• Exposure to power systems, relaying, and three‑phase systems.
• Experience or familiarity with SCADA systems, PLCs, HMIs, and automation tools.

Work Environment

This position is based in a professional operations center in Birmingham, Alabama adjacent to a major utility facility. Most SIA work is performed in an office environment using computer-based engineering tools and CAD software, with some travel required for site visits, commissioning, training, and storm restoration support. Standard office hours with occasional support for after-hours events are expected. Safety, collaboration, and continuous learning are emphasized.

• Pay range: $28.00 - $40.00 per hour
