Overview

Confidential Client is seeking an Entry Level Distribution Engineer based in Tampa, FL. This contract-to-hire role supports power distribution infrastructure upgrades and storm-hardening projects across the Southeastern United States. You'll help with engineering calculations, distribution design, drafting construction drawings, and preparing project packages to improve system reliability.


What You’ll Do

  • Conduct site visits and document field conditions (visual inspection, equipment inventory, measurements, sketches, and photos).
  • Compare field data to base plans and prepare accurate field notes for design work.
  • Evaluate loading of equipment (transformers, poles, structural components) to ensure safe, code-compliant, cost-effective designs.
  • Review and interpret local design manuals, utility standards, and jurisdictional details.
  • Perform electric distribution designs following Utility standards and draft construction drawings for permitting and construction.
  • Prepare project/job packages including material estimates and requisitions.
  • Review proposed construction plans to assess impacts on existing distribution systems.
  • Identify and develop solutions for conductor and structural clearance violations.
  • Produce final design plan packages for implementation and ensure ISO compliance where applicable.
  • Attend regular project team meetings and coordinate design activities with stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • ~1 year of engineering experience (entry-level / early-career candidates encouraged).
  • Interest in Power / Energy / Utilities and distribution engineering.
  • Proficiency in distribution design principles and engineering calculations.
  • Experience with Bentley Open Utility Designer, Smallworld, Maximo, Pole Load, and AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills and initiative.

Preferred / Additional Skills

  • Hands-on design or engineering experience in electric utilities.
  • Familiarity with primary and secondary distribution systems and utility design standards.
  • Experience with Duke Energy distribution standards or similar utility systems is a plus.
  • Experience interacting with customers, developers, or construction crews on distribution projects.
  • Knowledge of MicroStation, BOUD/Maximo, or other industry software.
  • EIT certification or having passed the Engineer-in-Training (Fundamentals) exam.
  • Excellent customer service orientation.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay range: $27.00/hr (Contract to Hire). Individual pay within this range will depend on qualifications, experience, and location.
