This Entry-Level Design Technician role supports power distribution design and field programs across the Cincinnati, OH area. The position combines office-based engineering design with field inspections for overhead and underground electrical distribution systems (4 kV–138 kV). This is a Contract-to-Hire opportunity with strong training, career-growth potential, and stability in the power utilities engineering industry. What You’ll Do
You will develop detailed design and construction work packages, perform engineering calculations, support permitting, and conduct field inspections and post-construction reviews. This role focuses on programmatic distribution work (overloaded transformers, inspection & maintenance, joint-use assignments, inspection reporting) and provides on-the-job training to grow into larger design efforts and leadership roles.
- Develop design and construction work packages for overhead and underground distribution systems (4 kV–138 kV)
- Ensure designs meet safety, permitting, and quality standards
- Perform structural and electrical calculations (wood pole loading, guying, conductor sag/tension, voltage drop, flicker)
- Travel to project sites to collect data and complete field inspections
- Prepare permitting documents for Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs)
- Provide construction support and respond to field questions
- Conduct post-construction reviews and root-cause outage analyses
- Collaborate with internal teams and clients; represent the business professionally
- Manage priorities and deliverables in a fast-paced project environment
- Grow into technical leadership and mentor engineers as experience develops
What We’re Looking For
Candidates should have foundational technical training, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work both in the office and the field.
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or related discipline
- Foundational knowledge of power distribution systems and distribution design principles
- Ability to create design/construction work packages and perform engineering calculations
- Familiarity with GIS-based tools and common utility design software
- Strong problem-solving skills for outage analysis and mitigation design
- Professional communication skills and client-facing ability
- Willingness to travel for field inspections and project support
- Desire and aptitude to lead technical projects and mentor others
Preferred / a plus:
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification
- Prior experience in utility or power distribution design environments
Work Environment & Schedule
This position is based in the Blue Ash / Cincinnati, OH office and supports projects across Ohio. Initial onsite expectation: four days per week for the first 9–12 months. After direct hire, typical onsite schedule shifts to three days per week with potential flexibility after demonstrated experience. Field visits are required as needed; mileage for business travel is reimbursed. Standard schedule: first shift, Monday–Friday.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay range: $24.04 per hour (hourly rate shown)
- Contract-to-hire; benefits eligibility may depend on job classification and length of employment
