What You’ll Do

This entry-level role supports structural and transportation inspections under experienced engineers. You will gain hands-on field experience inspecting bridges and related structures, documenting conditions, and preparing reports and exhibits.

  • Perform field inspections of bridges and transportation-related structures under the supervision of licensed professional engineers.
  • Assist in preparing inspection, evaluation, and condition assessment reports.
  • Record field observations, measurements, and photographs according to agency and inspection standards.
  • Review structure plans, load ratings, and prior inspection records to support assessments.
  • Use engineering/inspection software to create report exhibits, sketches, calculations, and supporting documentation.
  • Perform limited design computations or quantity estimates tied to inspection findings and repair concepts (as applicable).
  • Coordinate with draftspersons/technicians for figures, data entry, and report assembly.
  • Communicate findings to clients and agency representatives as needed.
  • Participate in field work that may include nights, weekends, travel, and tasks at heights or over traffic and water.

Qualifications

Candidates should be recent graduates or seniors ready to develop a career in structural/transportation inspection.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (accredited university) — senior or recent graduate welcome.
  • Strong interest in bridge and structural inspection, field work, and transportation infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam, or Civil 3D is a plus.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office Suite and PDF editing tools.
  • Engineer‑In‑Training (E.I.T.) certification, or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel and perform field work.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and attention-to-detail skills.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The role requires routine physical activity common to field engineering roles.

  • Frequently required to sit, use hands/fingers, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequent requirements to talk and hear; occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 25 pounds.
  • Work may require close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Compensation & Other Details

  • Salary: $75,000–$80,000 per year.
  • Employment type: Full time.
  • Relocation assistance is available.
