What You’ll Do
This Contract-to-Hire Entry Level Civil Engineer role is a hands-on, field-first opportunity designed to build practical construction/site experience before moving into office-based design and analysis tasks.
- Support geotechnical and civil projects through a mix of fieldwork and office tasks.
- Spend significant time on construction sites performing observation and quality control under senior engineer direction.
- Assist with materials testing and operate materials testing software to verify compliance with specifications.
- Support utility construction and substation-related projects by applying basic civil and geotechnical principles.
- Read and interpret engineering plans and drawings to guide field investigations and monitoring.
- Help prepare technical reports, site documentation, and clear technical writing for client deliverables.
- Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and clients to resolve field issues and coordinate activities.
- Use AutoCAD / Civil 3D to create and update drawings and support drafting efforts.
- Gradually transition into more advanced engineering analysis and design as your skills grow.
- Maintain a construction-minded approach—understand how design translates to field implementation.
- Participate actively in a small-team, mentorship-driven environment to accelerate learning.
Who You Are (Essential Qualifications)
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- Strong interest in both field work and design; willing to spend significant time in the field early in your career.
- Construction mindset — curiosity about how projects are built and how design decisions are implemented.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and construction drawings.
- Basic understanding of geotechnical principles and common construction procedures.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; comfortable interacting with contractors and clients.
- Good analytical and problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Technical writing skills suitable for clear, accurate reporting.
- Basic proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D (or willingness to learn quickly).
- Comfortable working in both field and office environments.
Preferred / nice-to-have:
- Engineering internship experience (civil/geotechnical/utility or related).
- Experience or exposure to utility construction or substation work.
- Familiarity with materials testing equipment and software.
- Construction-related college experience (co-ops, fieldwork, projects).
Work Environment & Schedule
- This role is field-heavy at the start (construction sites, materials testing, QA/QC) and transitions to more office-based design, analysis, and drafting over time.
- You will work closely with senior engineers in a collaborative, small-company culture focused on hands-on learning and mentorship.
- Safety-focused environment; appropriate PPE and training provided for field assignments.
Job Type, Location & Compensation
- Job type: Contract to Hire (initially contractor, with potential conversion).
- Workplace: Onsite / field work required in Wellston, MO and surrounding project locations.
- Pay range: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour. Individual pay within the range will depend on qualifications, experience, and other job-related factors.
