What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is hiring Entry-Level Background Investigators to conduct federal-style background investigations using virtual and in-person interview methods. This is an investigator role focused on fact-finding, interviewing, and documentation in support of national security and suitability determinations.
- Use multiple electronic systems and tools to conduct comprehensive interviews with subjects, employers, associates, references, and other identified sources.
- Review records and source documents, resolve material issues, and assemble accurate, defensible case files.
- Conduct interviews primarily via Virtual Teleconference (VTC), with phone and occasional in-person interviews as required.
- Complete multiweek virtual training and participate in additional shadowing and mentorship with experienced investigators.
- Support temporary duty assignments (TDY) that may require travel across the U.S., typically short-term (about two weeks).
- Maintain timely, accurate case notes and meet productivity and quality expectations.
Qualifications
Required (minimum):
- Bachelor’s degree, or 4 years of progressively responsible experience demonstrating problem solving, planning/organization, and effective oral and written communication.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a favorable determination based on a T5 investigation (Top Secret level suitability).
- Strong attention to detail, integrity, and a professional, mission-focused work ethic.
- Comfortable using multiple technology systems simultaneously; strong computer literacy.
- Current valid driver’s license, reliable personal vehicle, and willingness to travel locally or for short TDY depending on assignment.
- Home office with reliable high-speed internet (a $50 monthly internet stipend is provided).
- Ability to sit, type, stand, or walk for extended periods and to prioritize workload effectively.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to present sensitive or complex information clearly and professionally.
Preferable (nice to have):
- Active Top Secret clearance based on a T5 investigation.
- Prior investigative, interviewing, or case-management experience (federal background investigations a plus).
Work Environment & Logistics

- Travel: Up to ~10% (local and occasional TDY across the U.S. for short assignments)
- Home-office stipend: $50/month for internet

Pay Range & Compensation
This role is covered by the Service Contract Labor Standards (SCA). Pay will meet or exceed the applicable SCA wage determination tied to the work location and contract.
- Estimated annual (national estimate shown on source): $80,722 per year (estimated)
- Minimum required hourly wage for federal contractor SCA baseline: $26.07 per hour
