Role Overview

Confidential client seeks an entry-level Engineering Associate I to support air permitting and environmental compliance work. This role evaluates industrial sources of air pollution, reviews construction and operating permit applications (including Title V), and represents the agency at public meetings. This position is located in South Carolina. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering that meets South Carolina licensure pathways.


What You’ll Do

  • Analyze and evaluate air pollution sources, control equipment, plans and specifications at industrial facilities proposed for construction or modification.
  • Prepare and issue construction permits per state and federal regulations.
  • Review applications and supporting data; assist with issuance of operating permits, including Title V as needed.
  • Attend public meetings/hearings and serve as a confidential client representative.
  • Maintain current knowledge of permitting guidance, procedures and regulations.
  • Conduct compliance activities and provide compliance assistance to regulated entities.
  • Coordinate with internal staff, consultants, and industry contacts; perform other duties as assigned by the section manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Education must meet requirements to pursue Professional Engineer registration in South Carolina (or have final approval letter for “substantially equivalent education” from SC LLR at time of application).
  • Good knowledge of engineering technical principles and ability to evaluate industrial processes for potential air pollution sources.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to plan and organize assigned work.
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license (out-of-state drivers must transfer).
  • Willingness to attend occasional evening or late-night public meetings and to travel overnight as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate or progress toward PE licensure.
  • Experience or coursework in environmental engineering, air permitting, or knowledge of the Clean Air Act and industrial pollution control equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to public service and environmental protection.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hiring range: $61,396 — $70,300 per year (salary information provided by the confidential client).
  • Additional posted salary context: $61,396 — $88,600 annually (estimated).

Work Location & Schedule

  • This position is based in South Carolina. Hybrid/telecommute option: the ability to work remotely up to 2 days per week is available after successful completion of one year of employment (subject to job duties). Normal schedule: Monday–Friday (typical daytime hours; occasional evenings or travel required).
