What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is recruiting for a flex‑staffed Engineering Assistant (levels 1 / 2 / 3) to support hydrology and hydraulics (H&H) engineering for transportation and airport projects. This position is based in Eagle River, AK and will work within a Central Region design group to analyze hydrologic data, perform hydraulic design, and prepare technical documents that support safe, durable transportation infrastructure.
Primary duties include:
- Analyze hydrologic and hydraulic data to size and design large-diameter culverts, fish-passage structures, storm drainage systems, and erosion protection measures.
- Prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for bid‑ready roadway and aviation projects.
- Author technical deliverables such as H&H reports, design study reports, and site visit memos.
- Conduct field inspections, including travel to remote sites (small aircraft or vehicle), and document site conditions and required remediation.
- Support project managers by coordinating consultant deliverables and reviewing engineering submittals.
- Work under the supervision of a registered professional engineer; grow responsibilities as experience and skills increase.
Who You Are / Key Competencies

Minimum Qualifications
This recruitment is flexibly staffed; positions may be filled at Engineering Assistant 1, 2, or 3 depending on qualifications.
Engineering Assistant 1
- Bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited program; OR
- Bachelor’s degree from a non‑ABET program AND EIT/LSIT certification or verification of passing the FE/FS exam.
- Applicants completing an ABET degree within nine months may be conditionally hired.
Engineering Assistant 2
- Bachelor’s degree (ABET) AND one year of entry‑level engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 (State of Alaska or equivalent); OR
- Bachelor’s degree (non‑ABET) with EIT/LSIT + one year experience; OR
- Five years progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience (substitutions allowed for graduate study).
Engineering Assistant 3
- Bachelor’s degree (ABET) AND two years of engineering experience (one year at working/intermediate level) OR equivalent combinations of education and experience (substitutions allowed).
- EIT certification may substitute where noted.
Required for all levels:
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to perform occasional field inspections, including travel within southcentral Alaska and occasional overnight stays in minimal accommodations.
Preferred (not required):
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) / Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) pass or Land Surveyor‑in‑Training (LSIT) / Fundamentals of Surveying (FS).
Working Conditions & Travel
- Office base is in Eagle River/Central Region headquarters (works primarily in cubicle/office environment).
- Regular site visits are required; some remote sites may require travel by small aircraft and walking in rugged or adverse conditions (steep embankments, brush, stream crossings).
- Occasional non‑standard hours may be required for emergency responses.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly range: $33.76 – $44.49 (OT eligible). Starting hourly rate depends on the level (EA 1 / 2 / 3) at hire.
