Summary This is a flex, full-time Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 role based in Anchorage or Fairbanks, AK (telecommute eligible). The position supports statewide public facilities projects through planning, design, and construction phases. Candidates will perform or assist with routine architectural/engineering assignments and may function as a Project Engineer overseeing construction activities under a Project Manager.
Compensation
- Engineering Assistant 1: $33.76 - $34.77 per hour (OT eligible)
- Engineering Assistant 2: $38.91 - $40.08 per hour (OT eligible)
- Engineering Assistant 3: $44.49 - $45.82 per hour (OT eligible)
What you’ll do
- Monitor construction activities and perform site inspections (may include travel to remote communities).
- Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
- Assist with scheduling, budgeting, and contract oversight.
- Prepare and maintain project documentation, reports, and change records.
- Support planning/scoping and design efforts as directed.
- Perform routine engineering assignments and assist higher-level engineers on larger projects.
- Serve on a management team that oversees public facility improvement projects from planning through construction.

- General engineering principles and practical application.
- Civil and facilities engineering knowledge relevant to buildings, transportation systems, and public works.
- Strong oral communication and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Problem solving: diagnose issues, evaluate alternatives, and recommend solutions.
- Ability to work in varied environments, including remote sites and adverse weather.
- Valid driver’s license required. Occasional travel (including small aircraft to remote communities) may be necessary.
Minimum qualifications (flexibly staffed) This recruitment is flexibly staffed and may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1, 2, or 3 level depending on training and experience.
Engineering Assistant 1
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET-accredited program; OR
- Bachelor’s degree from a non-ABET program plus EIT/LSIT or verification of passing the FE/FS exam.
- Applicants completing a qualifying degree within nine months may be considered conditionally.
Engineering Assistant 2
- Bachelor’s degree (ABET-accredited) AND one year of entry-level engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 (or equivalent); OR
- Non-ABET bachelor’s plus EIT/LSIT or FE/FS verification AND one year of Engineering Assistant 1 experience; OR
- Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience (with substitution rules for graduate study).
Engineering Assistant 3
- Bachelor’s degree (ABET-accredited) AND two years of engineering experience (one year at working/intermediate trainee level); OR
- Non-ABET bachelor’s plus EIT and two years of qualifying experience; OR
- Substitutions allowed for combinations of education and experience per class specification.
