Confidential Client is seeking an Engineering Assistant (flex level 1/2/3) to join its Transportation and Public Facilities — Facilities Services team based in Eagle River, AK. This flex role will be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1, 2, or 3 level depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The position involves supporting planning, design, and construction oversight for facilities improvement projects across the client’s portfolio.

What You’ll Do

Confidential Client’s Facilities Services team manages statewide facilities projects from planning through construction. As an Engineering Assistant (1/2/3) you will:

  • Monitor construction activities and act as a Project Engineer on assigned projects.
  • Coordinate with contractors, design professionals, and internal stakeholders.
  • Track schedules, budgets, and prepare project documentation and reports.
  • Oversee contractor work to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety requirements.
  • Perform routine engineering assignments and assist higher-level engineers on complex tasks.
  • Travel to project sites as needed; some assignments may require temporary relocation to remote communities.

Who We’re Looking For (Core Competencies)

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • General engineering knowledge — principles and practical application.
  • Facilities engineering understanding — systems, equipment, operations, and safety practices.
  • Civil engineering fundamentals — planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of public works.
  • Strong oral communication — clear presentations, effective listening, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Problem solving — accurate problem identification, sound judgment, and practical recommendations.

Special notes:

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • May require occasional travel to remote project sites, sometimes via small aircraft and in adverse weather.

Minimum Qualifications

The position is flexibly staffed. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the level they apply to:

Engineering Assistant 1

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET-accredited institution; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree (non-ABET) plus Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate, or evidence of passing the FE/FS examination.
  • Conditional offers may be made to students completing an ABET-accredited degree within nine months.

Engineering Assistant 2

  • Bachelor’s degree (ABET) plus one year of entry-level engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 (State of Alaska or equivalent); OR
  • Non-ABET degree plus EIT/LSIT or FE/FS verification and one year of equivalent experience; OR
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience (with substitutions for graduate study).

Engineering Assistant 3

  • Bachelor’s degree (ABET) plus two years’ engineering experience (one year at working/intermediate trainee level); OR
  • Non-ABET degree plus EIT plus two years’ qualifying experience; OR
  • Equivalent combinations of education/experience as outlined in the confidential client’s classification rules.

Documentation required at interview or before hire may include transcripts (unofficial acceptable), driver’s license, and professional references.
