Position overview

Confidential Client is seeking an early-career Engineer – Sustainment to join a Life Cycle Engineering / Design-Build-Sustain (DBS) team supporting VIRGINIA Class and SSN(X) submarine sustainment programs in Groton, CT. This role advocates for post‑delivery maintenance needs during concept and detail design using 3D Teamcenter models, with the goal of maximizing operational availability and reducing total ownership cost for the U.S. Navy.

  • Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance

Key responsibilities

  • Develop working knowledge of ship specifications and maintenance resources (Class Maintenance Plan, PMS Viewer, OARS/3M).
  • Support VIRGINIA and SSN(X) sustainment projects and assist task leads to deliver project work.
  • Perform entry-level assessments of ship systems and components for maintainability, accessibility, reliability, and lifting/handling considerations.
  • Support life-cycle cost analyses and contribute to trade studies that influence design decisions.
  • Learn and use NX Teamcenter to review 3D models during major area team reviews and working-level design meetings.
  • Participate in shipyard industrial area walkthroughs and periodic hull observations to raise deck-plate awareness.
  • Engage in structured training with technical leads to understand ship operations underway, in-port, and during dry-docking.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Engineering.
  • 0–5 years of post‑graduate engineering experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and organized work habits.
  • Open-minded, willing to learn, think critically, and advocate for maintenance stakeholders.

Preferred qualifications

  • Background or coursework in Mechanical, Ocean, Structural, Electrical, Materials, or Systems Engineering.
  • Entry‑level familiarity with specification requirements, maintainability principles, failure history research, and interpreting drawings/diagrams.
  • Exposure to NX Teamcenter or similar PLM/3D modeling tools (helpful but not required).
