Department Overview
Confidential Client’s Water Quality Control Division — Field Services Section provides compliance assistance and assurance for drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities. The team performs field inspections, sanitary surveys, technical evaluations, emergency response support, regulatory guidance, and training to protect public health and Colorado’s water resources.
What You’ll Do
This is an entry-level engineering role (Engineer-in-Training I) working under the direct supervision of licensed engineers. You will perform field engineering evaluations, compliance inspections, technical and compliance assistance, emergency response support for spills and drinking water events, and assist with enforcement and training efforts.
- Conduct field engineering evaluations of drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities
- Perform compliance inspections and sanitary surveys
- Support drinking water emergencies and field responses
- Provide technical and compliance assistance to regulated facilities and the public
- Assist with preparation of technical reports, guidance, and policy documents
- Track and manage assigned projects to completion
Key Responsibilities
- Field engineering and field-based compliance assurance
- Respond to public and facility inquiries
- Provide technical and compliance assistance to public water systems and regulated facilities
- Support enforcement and operator training as needed
- Collect and analyze field data and prepare recommendations
Salary & Employment Type
- Salary: $69,024 – $82,836 per year
- Employment type: Full time (Contract appointment as listed)
Minimum Qualifications
You may qualify in any one of the following ways:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. OR
- Current enrollment as an Engineer-Intern (EIT) with the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors (substitutes for required degree). OR
- Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) from the Colorado State Board (substitutes for EIT enrollment).
Note: Applicants may qualify through work experience alone or a combination of education and experience. All qualifying experience must be documented in the Work Experience section of the application; “See Resume” is not acceptable. Part-time work will be prorated.
Preferred Qualifications & Competencies
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- Experience in water quality operations or engineering related to wastewater or drinking water treatment
- Experience conducting inspections
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordination with stakeholders and public water systems
- Ability to evaluate engineering theories, policies, and apply operational and planning concepts
- Independent critical thinking and effective teamwork skills
- Experience writing policy or guidance documents
- Knowledge of federal and state clean water/drinking water regulations and statutes
- Ability to analyze data and provide technical recommendations; GIS/mapping skills a plus
- High standards of integrity, respect, and the ability to manage conflict constructively
Conditions of Employment & Working Conditions
- This position is only open to Colorado state residents.
- Must be able to operate a vehicle to perform position duties.
- Travel: Approximately 30% independent travel statewide for site visits, meetings, conferences; may include occasional overnight or nationwide travel.
- Pre-employment background check is required.
- Must be available to respond during emergencies (bio/chemical attacks, disease outbreaks, all-hazards) and report to work as needed.
