Summary

Confidential Client is seeking an Engineer I or Engineer II to join the Waste Management Program. This full-time, onsite role in Pierre, SD focuses on regulatory and technical work to protect public health and the environment related to municipal and commercial waste, landfills, contaminated soil, medical waste, yard waste, and construction/demolition debris.

  • Pay: $32.85 - $34.49 / hour (depending on level and qualifications)
  • Hiring & Retention Incentive: $2,500 (subject to program terms)
  • Workweek: 40 hours
  • Employment type: Full-time

What You’ll Do

As a member of the Waste Management Program you will help implement solid waste regulatory policy and deliver technical services that protect human health and the environment. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Conduct solid waste field inspections at disposal and landfill facilities
  • Prepare inspection reports, technical reports, and formal correspondence
  • Analyze groundwater monitoring well data for municipal solid waste landfills
  • Recommend changes to landfill groundwater monitoring plans
  • Review applications and draft permits for solid waste facilities
  • Maintain environmental databases and analyze environmental monitoring data
  • Provide technical guidance and customer-focused assistance to colleagues, other agencies, and the public

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications (required to be considered):

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental, geological, civil, or related engineering field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordination with engineers, scientists, agencies, and the public
  • Ability to learn and apply federal and state solid waste regulations
  • Ability to apply basic engineering principles to the design, construction, operation, and permitting of landfills and solid waste facilities
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, set goals, and work independently or in a team
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred / differentiators:

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) / Fundamentals of Engineering passed, or ability to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) licensure
  • MOLO (Manager of Landfill Operations) certification or desire to pursue MOLO (SWANA)
  • Experience with groundwater monitoring data analysis or environmental database management

Licenses & Certifications

  • Preference for candidates who have passed the Engineer-In-Training (EIT) / Fundamentals of Engineering exam or who can obtain PE licensure.
  • Desire to achieve/maintain MOLO certification is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
