What You’ll Do

You will apply engineering design, project management, and maintenance skills to utility systems while supporting projects from conception through commissioning. Work independently with minimal guidance and collaborate across teams and external contractors to meet timelines, budgets, and regulatory requirements.

• Apply protection & control (P&C) engineering principles for 4 kV through 765 kV substations and associated transmission systems
• Plan and oversee engineering projects — scope, schedule, budget, regulatory compliance
• Prepare and review P&C scopes, relay settings, calculation sheets, and setting files
• Perform area protection studies, short-circuit and system impedance modeling
• Support installation, commissioning, checkout, and troubleshooting activities
• Coordinate with customers, interconnected utilities, contractors, and regulatory authorities
• Contribute to NERC-related tasks (e.g., PRC-023, FAC-008) and other compliance deliverables
• Peer-review and approve P&C deliverables; manage and review outsourced P&C work
• Identify and resolve protection issues using interruption reports and fault recorder data
• Contribute to system-wide protection standards, metering and control applications
• Provide subject-matter guidance and on-the-job training to teammates

P&C Engineering Accountabilities

• Perform and review relay protection and control activities for electrical substation projects (4 kV–765 kV)
• Prepare and review P&C engineering settings and designs for substation projects
• Prepare and review relay setting deliverables and setting files
• Model transmission impedances and perform short-circuit/fault studies
• Review transmission planning proposals and provide P&C recommendations
• Participate in project scheduling, resource planning and cost control for assigned projects

Qualifications

Note: This role is posted at multiple grade levels. Minimums below correspond to entry (Engineer Assc / Grade 6); higher grades require additional experience, education or licensure.

• Engineer Assc (Grade 6)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Entry-level (new graduates encouraged)
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is encouraged
  • Representative salary: $84,000

• Engineer (Grade 7)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET) plus ~2+ years relevant experience OR Master’s degree may substitute for experience
  • Engineering Technology degree may be acceptable if candidate obtains PE licensure
  • Representative salary: $86,000 – $105,000

• Engineer Sr (Grade 8)

  • Bachelor’s in engineering plus ~4+ years’ related experience OR Master’s/PhD with 2+ years’ experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration encouraged/preferred
  • Representative salary: $98,993 – $124,940

Required / preferred skills and experience (examples based on role duties):

• Experience with relay protection, relay setting calculations and protection schemes
• Familiarity with transmission system modeling and short-circuit analysis
• Working knowledge of NERC P&C standards and documentation requirements
• Strong analytical, project management and communication skills
• Ability to peer-review technical deliverables and to mentor junior engineers

Compensation & Benefits

• Base salary range (source posting for this listing): $98,993 — $124,940 (Engineer Sr range shown in original posting)
• Additional published ranges in source listing:
  • Engineer Assc: $84,000
  • Engineer: $86,000 — $105,000
• Compensation grade (source): SP20-007; other posted comp-range reference: $87,633 — $109,543
