Role overview

This entry-level engineering role supports technical and project work across utility/energy operations. You will apply engineering fundamentals and analytical techniques to complete assignments, support process improvements, and prepare technical documentation. What you’ll do

  • Apply engineering theory and analytical techniques to solve routine and moderately complex problems.
  • Break problems into components, perform necessary analysis, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Support business-process improvements and recommend enhancements to existing workflows.
  • Prepare technical reports, studies, improvement requisitions, and clear documentation for stakeholders.
  • Coordinate work activities with peers and other groups to meet project objectives and schedules.
  • Use scheduling tools and methods (CPM, PERT, flow charts) to support budget and project planning.
  • Provide training and guidance to less experienced team members as needed.
  • Make decisions within established policies and escalate when appropriate.
  • Network across teams to resolve issues, build consensus, and drive results.

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (minimum requirement for Engineer Associate level).
  • Entry-level candidates with a Master’s degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program may be considered at the Engineer level.
  • Demonstrated analytical ability, problem-solving skills, and familiarity with economic analysis techniques.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear technical reports.
  • Ability to work well in teams, identify stakeholders, and navigate cross-functional relationships.
  • Familiarity with project scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT) is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn utility regulation, financing basics, and company processes.
  • Note: Senior-level/engineer positions may have higher education, experience, or certification requirements. A senior executive may waive the ABET requirement in limited circumstances.

Preferred / Nice-to-have

  • Internship or co-op experience in energy, utilities, or a related engineering field.
  • Coursework or experience in economic analysis, process improvement, or systems thinking.
  • Exposure to project cost forecasting and budget planning.

  • Roanoke, VA

Compensation & benefits

  • Entry Level starting pay referenced: $84,000 (listed by client).
  • Compensation range for posted grade: $74,551 – $128,688 per year.
  • Comprehensive benefits package included (medical, retirement, paid time off, etc.) as provided by the hiring organization.

Physical & work requirements

  • Sedentary work classification: occasional lifting up to 10 pounds; mostly desk-based with intermittent walking or standing.
