Role overview

The Confidential Client is seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to join an Integrated System Test (IST) software team in Sunnyvale, CA. You will develop and maintain embedded software that interacts directly with hardware, device drivers, and Linux-based platforms to support high-performance semiconductor test systems. This hands-on role spans low-level firmware and kernel interfaces through APIs consumed by application-level software.


What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and maintain embedded software components for IST platforms.
  • Develop and maintain Linux platform code, device drivers, and low-level hardware interfaces.
  • Build robust APIs and services for higher-level applications and test automation.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers, firmware developers, and product managers to integrate software and hardware.
  • Diagnose and debug system-level issues using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG, or similar tools.
  • Contribute to system integration, performance tuning, and reliability improvements.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and unit/integration tests.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of professional experience developing embedded software on Linux-based platforms.
  • Proficiency in C and C++; experience writing and debugging device drivers is required.
  • Strong understanding of hardware interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe, GPIO) and firmware interaction patterns.
  • Experience with cross-compilation toolchains, build systems (Make, CMake), and embedded debugging tools.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and automated testing practices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work across engineering disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) or custom Linux kernels.
  • Background in integrated system test (IST), semiconductor test environments, or automated test equipment.
  • Experience with scripting languages (Python, Perl) for test automation and tooling.
  • Familiarity with FPGA integration or FPGA toolflows.
  • Experience with performance analysis and profiling tools.

Technical & Soft Skills

  • Strong C/C++ programming and code-quality practices.
  • Debugging and system-level diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
