Role Overview

Confidential Client is seeking an early-career Embedded Software Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team in San Francisco, CA. This is a hands-on role working on hardware-facing software that runs on Linux userspace and integrates closely with industrial hardware. You will work under senior engineers’ mentorship to grow skills in systems programming, hardware integration, and reliability for safety-critical contexts. What You’ll Do

  • Support integration of industrial hardware by working with register maps and standard device protocols.
  • Assist in implementing Hardware Abstraction Layers (HALs) and drivers under senior guidance.
  • Write and maintain code in Rust (and occasionally C/C++) targeting Linux userspace.
  • Use hardware debugging tools such as logic analyzers and oscilloscopes to diagnose issues.
  • Contribute to code quality through unit/integration testing and thoughtful peer reviews.
  • Learn and apply reliability and safety-minded engineering practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 0–2 years professional experience in systems programming or embedded software.
  • Foundational knowledge of C, C++, or Rust, with strong motivation to work primarily in Rust.
  • Basic understanding of Linux internals or operating system concepts.
  • Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn hardware–software integration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or personal projects involving embedded systems or microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN).
  • Experience with hardware debugging tools (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes).
  • Interest in safety-critical or real-time systems.
  • Any hands-on Rust experience (even from personal projects).
