What You’ll Do

  • Develop and maintain embedded firmware for bare-metal and RTOS-based systems that run on vehicle controllers and sensors.
  • Implement and test digital communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN) to integrate sensors, actuators, and vehicle networks.
  • Contribute to state machines, command/control software, and safety-related logic for autonomous vehicle functions.
  • Write reliable, memory- and performance-conscious code (primary language: Rust; C/C++ as needed).
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to integrate, debug, and validate hardware–software interfaces using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and SWD/JTAG debuggers.
  • Build unit and integration tests and validate firmware on hardware test stands and target boards.
  • Debug on-target using standard embedded tools and participate in code reviews, design discussions, and documentation.

What Success Looks Like

  • After 30 Days: You understand the embedded architecture, development toolchain, and hardware platforms; you contribute small bug fixes and tests.
  • After 60 Days: You independently implement and test scoped embedded features and debug on target hardware.
  • After 90 Days: You deliver validated embedded software on target hardware, own smaller features or subsystems, and contribute to team practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience programming in C, C++, Rust, or another systems programming language via coursework, internships, projects, or professional work.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems, microcontrollers, or real-time software development.
  • Understanding of SPI, I2C, UART, CAN and basic hardware interfaces.
  • Knowledge of state machines, interrupts, memory management, and constrained-resource programming.
  • Hands-on experience debugging technical systems (academic projects, internships, student teams, personal projects, or professional work).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and interest in working directly with hardware.
  • Willingness to learn Rust and modern embedded development practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Internship, co-op, research, or project experience developing embedded software.
  • Experience with bare-metal or RTOS-based development.
  • Familiarity with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, or other hardware debugging tools.
  • Experience in robotics, autonomous systems, automotive, aerospace, industrial automation, or similar hardware-focused projects.
  • Exposure to control systems, PID controllers, or motion control.
  • Additional coursework or projects in electrical engineering or digital electronics.
  • Prior Rust experience or strong interest in building production embedded software in Rust.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Target salary range: $132,000 USD - $152,000 USD (annual). Final compensation will be determined based on skills, experience, and location in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Employment type: Full-time.
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA (onsite / hybrid as required by the role). Travel as needed for test stands and integration work.
