Overview

Confidential Client is seeking an Embedded Linux Software Engineer to join their engineering team in Andover, MA. This is an onsite W-2 role focused on developing and maintaining embedded Linux systems for connected devices and hardware platforms.

What You’ll Do

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded Linux software for real-time or resource-constrained devices.
• Implement and optimize device drivers, board support packages (BSPs), and kernel components as needed.
• Build and maintain Yocto/OpenEmbedded-based build systems, cross-compilation toolchains, and firmware images.
• Integrate middleware, networking stacks, and security features into embedded Linux distributions.
• Troubleshoot hardware-software integration issues using debugging tools, logic analyzers, and serial consoles.
• Collaborate with hardware engineers, test engineers, and product teams to deliver reliable embedded solutions.
• Participate in code reviews, CI pipelines, and documentation to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong experience developing embedded software on Linux-based platforms.
• Proficiency in C (primary) and familiarity with C++ for embedded systems.
• Experience with Linux kernel configuration, device tree, and driver development.
• Familiarity with Yocto Project, Buildroot, or other embedded Linux build systems.
• Experience cross-compiling, configuring toolchains, and debugging on target hardware.
• Solid knowledge of bootloaders (e.g., U-Boot) and embedded storage/flash management.
• Practical troubleshooting skills using tools such as gdb, strace, perf, and serial/kernel logs.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative, cross-functional team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with real-time patches or PREEMPT_RT.
• Background in security hardening for embedded Linux devices.
• Familiarity with networking protocols relevant to IoT / edge devices.
• Exposure to automated testing, CI for embedded builds, and manufacturing support.
• BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
