Responsibilities

This entry-level Embedded Firmware Engineer I role supports cross-disciplinary teams building mission-critical embedded systems for defense and aerospace programs. Working under senior mentor guidance, you will:

  • Develop and debug embedded firmware and software in C/C++ (and Python where appropriate) for microcontrollers and SoC platforms (for example, ARM Cortex family).
  • Implement and integrate peripheral interfaces and simple device drivers for SPI, I²C, UART, GPIO and similar real‑time I/O.
  • Support hardware bring-up and board-level verification in the lab using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and related test equipment.
  • Assist with integration of real-time applications on RTOS or bare-metal platforms to meet responsiveness and deterministic behavior requirements.
  • Contribute to basic FPGA tasks (simple logic blocks in VHDL/Verilog, simulation, timing constraint updates) under guidance from senior FPGA engineers.
  • Execute unit and integration tests, record results, log defects, and participate in troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
  • Produce and maintain required engineering artifacts (requirements summaries, block diagrams, test logs, release checklists) following configuration-management processes.
  • Participate in peer code/design reviews and Agile or phase-gate team activities using tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, Jira, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation and bring‑up instructions to support sustainment and handoff activities.
  • Follow disciplined safety, quality, and security practices, including export-control and federal contract requirements as directed.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM field.
  • 0–2 years’ relevant experience (including internships, co-ops, or substantial academic projects) in embedded systems, firmware/software, FPGA, or digital hardware.
  • Hands-on experience (academic, project, or internship) in at least one of:
    • Embedded firmware or software for microcontrollers/SoCs (C/C++), or
    • FPGA/HDL development of simple logic blocks (VHDL or Verilog), or
    • Digital hardware or CCA design/test (schematic capture, board bring-up, lab work).
  • Familiarity with version control (for example, Git) and basic build/test workflows.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and interest in working near the hardware/software boundary.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and ability to collaborate in multi-discipline, matrixed teams.
  • U.S. citizenship required due to federal contract and export-control requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ARM-based microcontrollers/SoCs and basic RTOS (for example, FreeRTOS) or bare‑metal development.
  • Exposure to FPGA toolchains (Xilinx Vivado/Vitis, Intel Quartus, Microsemi Libero) and simulation environments (ModelSim, Questa).
  • Hands-on lab experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs and other electronics test instruments.
  • Familiarity with embedded communication buses (CAN, SPI, I²C, UART, Ethernet, MIL-STD-1553) from coursework or projects.
  • Awareness of secure or safety-critical development practices (MISRA C, DO‑178C, ISO 26262) or strong interest in these domains.
  • Experience working in Agile/SCRUM or structured phase-gate environments.
