What You’ll Do
Provide electrical engineering support for transmission & distribution, generation, water, technical services, and telecommunications projects for a utility environment. Work closely with internal teams, contractors, regulators, and industrial customers to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant electric service delivery.
- Monitor and coordinate current construction and maintenance projects; work with contractors and consultants.
- Review and update construction standards and practices; apply engineering principles to planning and design alternatives.
- Assist in the design and layout of electrical transmission and distribution lines; review work orders and coordinate field activities.
- Support and prepare transmission and distribution system studies, including load flow, short circuit, and computer models.
- Coordinate engineering activities with industrial and commercial customers regarding service installations, power factor, harmonics, and technical policy.
- Assist in writing and evaluating equipment specifications and contracts (transformers, cables, pole attachments, easements, franchise agreements).
- Support arc flash studies and provide data for customer and utility safety studies.
- Contribute to reliability improvement efforts, database population and analysis for failures, maintenance, and outages.
- Support compliance studies and reporting for NERC, MRO, and MISO requirements.
- Assist in annual operating budget development and project projections.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet department goals.
Qualifications
Required / Minimum
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (power option preferred).
- Electrical Engineer I: entry-level engineering position.
- Electrical Engineer II: typically requires ~2+ years of electric utility transmission & distribution experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NESC, NEC, NFPA, OSHA) and familiarity with regulatory frameworks (NERC, MRO, MISO).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to build productive relationships across departments and with customers.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
Preferred
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Iowa, or actively working toward licensure (level II preferred). If obtained, certification must be maintained while employed.
- Familiarity with CAD and GIS tools.
- Experience with utility system studies (load flow, short circuit), protective device coordination, and reliability analyses.
Skills & Tools
- Advanced Excel (required) — data analysis and modeling.
- VBA or similar scripting for automation and data manipulation.
- Experience with load flow and short circuit analysis tools and computer models.
- Familiarity with CAD and GIS for design and mapping.
- Project management and technical specification writing.
Compensation & Employment Details
- Salary: $72,000 - $100,000 per year (range provided by Confidential Client).
- Employment type: Full-time.
- Location: Muscatine, IA — on-site work in an office environment with occasional field visits to generation facilities and outdoor job sites.

- Primarily office-based; occasional visits to a coal-fired power plant, substations, or outdoor job sites in all weather conditions.

- Must comply with all site and safety rules at locations visited.
