Department overview

Confidential Client’s Electric Asset Management — Distribution Planning team delivers engineering and technical support for planning, design, construction and maintenance of the electric distribution system. The team focuses on capacity utilization, voltage and power factor support, and reliable operation of primary distribution networks.


What you’ll do

This is an entry-level engineering role focused on distributed generation (DG) interconnection studies (solar, batteries, EVs) and distribution system planning in West Sacramento, CA. Key responsibilities include:

  • Submit long-term and short-term reconstruction, capacity, and reliability plan recommendations.
  • Manage small local projects (typically ≤ $100,000) and review cost estimates for capacity and reliability work.
  • Monitor substation and feeder capabilities, analyze historical loads, and forecast growth to identify deficiencies.
  • Prepare Preliminary Planning Reviews (PPRs), Project Analysis (PAs), and economic analyses (EASOP) for assigned areas.
  • Model distribution systems accurately and coordinate updates with Mapping/records systems.
  • Develop switching plans, settings for load tap changers and protective devices, and recommendations for Distribution Automation devices.
  • Perform protection coordination reviews and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support outage prevention, emergency restoration, and response to customer voltage/EMF complaints as needed.
  • Collaborate with construction, estimating, operations, and other stakeholders to translate planning requirements into deliverable work packages.

Minimum & preferred qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

Preferred:

  • Professional engineering registration (PE) or progress toward licensure.
  • Experience with distributed generation interconnection studies (solar, battery, EV).
  • CYME (or similar) distribution modeling experience.
  • Protection coordination studies and familiarity with AC/DC schematics.
  • Power systems emphasis within electrical engineering curricula.
  • Python scripting for engineering automation.
  • PSCAD, microgrids, or related simulation experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Compensation & work type

  • Work type: Onsite — West Sacramento, CA.
  • Annual salary range (locality-specific): CA Minimum $99,936 — CA Maximum $150,108. Actual pay is based on skills, experience, education, licensure, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.
